As a staff member, I am obligated to write reviews of balls whether or not they make my tournament, league or practice only bag. At the time I drilled my Tenacity, I already had a Creed, Vintage Inferno, Blue Flame and Vandal Strike drilled pin down so I thought I would try something different as pin up was not an option due to the pin length (Canada did not adopt the 3oz side weight rule this past year). With that in mind, I drilled my Tenacity 80x3.75x40 (leverage type layout with mass bias below thumb) upon recommendation to both try something a little different and to calm down a ball with high skid/flip potential.
I took the Tenacity to league and did not what I saw out of the box. I saw plenty of length and a calmer motion on the backend, but the ball just got too far down the lane to be forgiving. Staying in the oil too long resulted in it skidding through for a 2 pin, so I kept bumping right with tight angles with moderate success, until I got the ball right too early in which it wanted to stand up too quickly for weak 10's.
It didn't take long to take a trip to the spinner with a 2k pad to kill the polish. This really woke the ball up to traction the midlane and made it much less responsive to wet/dry. I was able to get a little further into the oil, saw some more roll and as a result had a better look out on the lane. The surface helped read the lane properly, but still wasn't the ideal ball reaction. Our league pattern is a bit too long for this ball, yet our shorter patterns in our Challenge league have proven to be too slick up front and my look has been amazing with other balls in my bag.
Alas, I still think that I made a poor choice with the layout. My profile of 18mph speed and low track push the ball too far down the lane for this type of layout on a shiny pearl ball to match up correctly. If my ball speed were softer and I wanted to stay closer to the track, then this ball would have been a much better match for me.
The Tenacity with this layout just doesn't have a home in my bag. My Method fills the same gap but with a little more roll and down lane recovery which give me more options on the lane. I don't regret trying the layout, but should have known better and will likely be looking to go stronger with the mass bias on a pin down next time I lay out a short pin ball. I wish that my review would be more helpful, but the weak mass bias/strong pin layouts are unique but not for everybody. If you are soft with your ball speed, consider a layout and ball like this, otherwise I would suggest ordering a longer pin than I did on your Tenacity and go with a stronger drill pattern.
