Likes:  The Brunswick Ultimate Defender has nice roll shape & continuation. You want to avoid getting too deep on the lane. If you have to get to 4th or 5th arrow, I think there are better options for getting up the hill and kicking corners.  The dull surface picks up in the oil nicely. Keep your angles in front of you and this ball will shine.

Dislikes: Little lazy if you get too deep.

Ball: Brunswick Ultimate Defender
Coverstock: HK22 A.C.T. 3.0 Hybrid
Core: Portal X
Factory Finish: 500, 2000
Layout: 50 x 5 x 15

The Ultimate Defender is proving to be the logical step down from the Brunswick Mindset, which sits at the very top of my Brunswick bag. The Defender has a similar overall hook potential to the Mindset but provides more continuation. Even though the surface is on the dull side, the cover still provides quite a bit of backend. The most impressive characteristic of the Defender is its versatility. I have used it on more of a typical house pattern, a heavier volume house pattern, and a shorter challenge type pattern with success.

I view the Ultimate Defender as the Ultimate matchup ball for a variety of styles. If you are rev challenged, it is strong enough to help out. If you struggle throwing high end balls due to rev rate or slow ball speed, it has a perfect blend of control while still having length and backend.

COMMENTS

The Ultimate Defender is a very strong ball.  It is a combination of the best parts of the previous two Defender series releases.  This one is earlier than the Defender Solid but later than the Defender Hybrid.  I find this ball to cover more boards than both.  It slots in between the Perfect Mindset and the Mindset in the current lineup.  This one is more responsive down the lane than both of those balls with a fairly quick move at the breakpoint.  Out of the box it needs Oil.  It worked best for me with a smoother surface.  I decided to leave it at 4000 grit so that I could use it more during league play.  Overall, the Defender Hybrid is a great responsive option on oilier lanes.

Out of the box this ball looked like it was blending the pattern. On a fresh house pattern it may have been too much for the early outside friction but worked well staying to the inside in the oil. The next week after adding some polish, this ball could be a must have in the bag. It is working so well in the oil, in the friction and not having issues with corner pins. This will increase the power in your bag.
