« on: June 28, 2003, 07:50:45 AM »
on page 41 of the august issue of bowling digest there is an ad for a bowling ball from neo-tac called the khameleon---the picture of this ball looks very much like a brunswick weightblock design. does anyone out there know about this ?

if this ball does have the weightblock and powrkoil 18 coverstock from the johnny petraglia lt-48 gold this will be a great ball----a remake of my favorite ball of all time.

Greg,

This is now a fairly well-known ball; been reviewed in Bowling This Month.
It is definitely the PowerKoil 18 Cover; the core is NOT thew LT-48 (as far as I know. It looks more like the Riot Zone (but lower RG and less RG Differential)or one of the Tudes. The cover is 600 grit dull, but can be shined easily, as you well know.

See the Neo-Tac website:

There is a lot of misinfo on this ball.

Concerning coverstock: everyone I know has said it's powerkoil 18. However Neo-tac insists it's similar to PK18 but it's their own blend of resins that are a little more aggressive.

Concerning weightblock: There are 2 different pictures I've seen. Both very different. The first was from neo-tac's original .PDF on the ball. It showed the ball having the same lightbulb core as the old LT-48 Gold as seen here:
http://www.bowlingballreviews.com/images/balls/571-c.jpg

However they have since changed their tune & now claim to have a mushroom type core similar to the Monster series as seen here:
http://www.bowlingballreviews.com/images/balls/1872-c.jpg

So, I guess It's anyone's guess as to what is actually inside of the ball, but I'm going to guess that they decided to switch to the mushroom core for one reason or another.

Unless they have opened up their own manufacturing plant or have reached an agreement like Dyno-Thane (Phil Cardinale) has reached with Storm (They use what he gives them to make DT's balls.), isn't it likely that Brunswick is making the Khameleon with a "plain" PowerKoil 18 coverstock. Of course, if they have had as many balls made as Lane#1, maybe they could also ask for a "special blend", like Lane#1 has probably asked for the Cherry Bomb.

All I'm saying is the odds are, based on what we have learned over the years, here and elsewhere, that the cover is very probably PK 18. Scuffed/sanded to 600 grit, PK 18 can be a very strong, VERY grippy coverstock.
