How to take care of "Rough Buff" coverstock?
« on: March 02, 2005, 03:27:53 PM »
Hi,

I just bought a Absolute Inferno and want to know how I can clean the coverstock. I can't get any Brunswick cleaners or polish here in Singapore and shipping them from the US is too expansive. I can only get hold of Neo-Tec stuff (Hook-it, Renew-it & Nitro) and Track (Clean & Dull, etc.). So from these options, what should I use to maintain the coverstock?

Thanks for the info.

BTW, Brunswick should set up a RHQ & distribution channel in Singapore!

To get my Absolute back to stock look, I use 600 grit to start and finish up with 1000 Abralon. (appx 800 grit paper)

I'm not a huge fan of NeoTac, or Track products. They leave the ball slimey and gross.

If you can get Track stuff, Track Clean N Smooth is a nice 1500 grit compound that I think is pretty  close to that rough buff finish.  Or use sandpaper around 1000 to 1200 grit as Nick said.

Ok, I will have to do this at a pro shop. What abt daily or after x number of games? In general, I use windows cleaner to clean the balls & simple green / 409 to get rid of lane oil.

Clean & Dull from Track smells awful, like puke. Otherwise, I use hook-it on my ultimate & renew-it on Bruiser & SlayR. A mixture of hook-it & renew-it for Time Zone.

I will give Clean & Smooth a try. Unlike some lucky people who has a spinner at home, I will leave the sandpaper thing to the pro shop.

I've been using Track Clean & Dull on all my bowling balls including my absolute since the day I first bowled with it. This is one of the best cleaner out there that doesn't change the coverstock finish 'coz there's no abrasives on it.Aside from that, It does deep clean the ball.Try it with a white cloth after you bowl & you will see how dirty the cloth will be with all the dirt & oil from the lanes. You can tell that the cleaner does work. The reaction I'm getting from my absolute is still the same when I got it new.

He's talking about cleaners and polishes and maintaining the coverstock, basically asking "which of two products do you prefer", and you suggested that he sand the ball. I don't think that's what he's looking for

Uh, actually, he said that he uses simple green and cleaner to get rid of lane oil.  I think he was asking how to maintain the rough-buff finish on the ball, and he's asking if the neo-tac or track stuff can be used.

But your missing the point, he doesn't want them to clean the oil off after each set like you're implying, he wants them to keep the finish on the ball, which is what i said.  Read the title of the post.  He wants to know what to use to polish the ball so it's like OOB finish.

Brunswick is supposed to be marketing a new "rough buff" polish kinda thing, at least that is the way i understood it.

kinda like "high gloss finish" from teh factory is 800 grit plus the polish.  I have yet to see any place selling the "rough Buff"

Here's a trade secret i don't care what you use but good ole hot soapy water in a 5 gal bucket. If you can get Dawn dishwashing liquid i would use that or any soap that removes oil or has degreasing agents

After reading the original post again, I think ckboon is referring to the coverstock of the AI as "Rough Buff", not referring to the finish.

I am probably wrong but that is what it sounds like

That's what the factory finish is, it's called "rough buff".  Not 1500 grit polished, not 800 grit wetsand, but..........."rought buff".  Hmm.

Not_enuff, the thing is, the rough buff doesn't come out until april (that's what bill said), and ckboon said that he can't get the Brunswick stuff in singapore.

Wow! Didn't mean to turn this into a "shooting war". Anyway, I should have said "cleaning / maintaining the ball after 3 league games or use products (Neo-tac, Track, etc) for general maintenance". Sorry abt that guys.

I'm using Hook-it & Renew-it on my equipment at the moment. I will try Clean & Dull on the Absolute after some games on it. I will just cleaning the surface with Simple Green & windows cleaner stuff after every few throws.

Thanks for all the comments.

BTW, my absolute specs:
15 lbs 3 oz with 2-3" PIN & 4 oz top weight.
Drilled for medium oil.

ckboon, you can try SAFRA YISHUN'proshop(if i'm not wrong, its called strikeline). The owner is the Brunswick dristibutor in Singapore.i 've seen that he has got high  gloss polish, but i'm not sure about the rough buff polish
