Like charlest said, if you just take a 4000 pad to what the current surface is now with the polish, it would be a little smoother reaction overall.
If they are hooking way too much downlane, then putting surface on the ball will cause it to be smoother on the back. If they are hooking too much overall, then a surface adjustment might help by using up some of the energy earlier and not storing it.
If it is too much overall hook, then you could use 500-2000-rough buff or royal compound to help smooth out the 500 underlying grit. And, if it is still too much, then you could use 500-1000-2000-rough buff or royal compound. Using the Royal compound, it won't snap as hard compared to polishing it because it has about a 3000 grit surface in the formula.
