Absolute Inferno Update (3M Rubbing Compound)
« on: November 21, 2005, 11:49:25 AM »
i used my absolute inferno for 1 game today on the league shot.
previously, it had polish on it, and i needed it for a heavier shot.
so i hit it with green scotch brite (600 grit).
it worked great on heavier oil.

but since moving onto a lesser volume of oil it was too condition specific.
so i put 3M Rubbing Compound on it and buffed it up.

on medium conditions, i shot straight over second arrow it goes into a heavy roll, and makes a HUGE footprint through the pocket.

i ended up with a 213, not too bad for no practice at a new house (i was a sub).

IMO 3M Rubbing Compound is a viable option when looking to have a ball between sanded and polished, and definately a suitable substitute for Rough Buff.

it says:

for 1500 or finer scratches

i bought it in the automotive section of walmart, $6.50

it was the only rubbing compound i saw.
i think my ball driller said it was #7 or something.

one thing i did notice while applying, is dont let it dry.
it seems to buff up easier if you keep working it till its gone.
rather than cake n' buff.

track clean and dull took it off the ball though.
so from now on im using remove all ball cleaner after sessions instead.

I use that one as fine polish. Good stuff. No silicon to clog the pores of the ball.

Yes, you've got to be careful in applying that one; it will buff up like a REAL glossy polish.

Try to get some rough buff when you can. I suspect that, even if you were careful, the AI's surface is possibly a little smoother than the original finish, but remember what you did and how it worked for you ON THAT OIL PATTERN. That's the important part.

good work.

its definately less shiney than my polished original inferno

i wont forget what it does, thats for sure, ive never seen continuation through the pocket like that before.
about 10 board to 5 board, roll over and smash the pocket.
the ball hits the pins like they owe it rent money.

If you want to know what a single buff compound can do on Activator+, look at a MoRich Shock & Awe in box condition in action. Great in-between coverstock prep between the 220 grit Rough Buff on the AI and the sometimes spasmic high gloss polish on the deceased II. You get good length (I guess 4-5' more than an AI OOB) and beautiful control over this strong pearl reactive. On an AI, this should result in a terrific medium condition ball.

I have used the high gloss polish, the 3M rubbing compound that you are talking about and ruff buff on my absolute.  All three produce a different reaction.  The 3M rubbing compound still feels pretty smooth when you rub it between your fingers, the ruff buff is gritty.

The high gloss of course gives the most length, the ruff buff the least.  All three polishes are valuable tools to have on your shelf to fine tune the reaction you need.

what i loved about it was, no early roll, no late snap.

once it hits the late mid lane, it turns over.
hard arc to the pocket, and finishes really hard.

when the lane breaks down:
you dont get the "what the hell happened there?" reaction.

it just starts its roll a few inches early and carries high flush.
just enough to let you know, its time to move or put it away.

3M stuff is pricey, but you definately get what you pay for.
ive never had any complaints about any of their products.
