Activator
« on: June 26, 2006, 11:14:27 AM »
I am a long time Brunswick user and i've had almost all
the infernos from activator to activator max.  Well the
other day Ritchie Allen and i were bowling one Regional
Pattern 3, and he just got off Track staff and was on storm
staff for a few years.  He recently got 2 Vapor Zones and a Scorchin.
While we were bowling he mentioned to me that the covers
on the Brunswick balls don't seem to absorb oil as well
as the Ebonite and Hammer balls he was using.  I didn't know
what to say but that mine were similar, the oil doesn't
absorb as fast as other companies balls.  Is this common
for activator covers, the balls are brand new so they
aren't oil clogged.  If the oil is still on the cover
the shots can be inconistent.  Just thought i'd ask...

IMO, this is a sign of a good coverstock.

there is less oil absorbtion, which means greater ball life.

when a ball is "dead" it usually means it has become what Brunswick calls "Coverstock + Oil".

resulting in less traction overall, oil or dry.

I don't know how fast Brunswick covers absorb or don't absorb oil.

Ebonite is the only one I have seen that brags about how fast their covers absorb oil.

I don't know how fast Dyno-Thane ball absorb oil but their Soaker covers major selling point is their ability to dissipate oil.

Legends/Lanemasters say a major positive about their premium covers is the balls tendency NOT to absorb oil quickly. and I know their covers are very reliable and very consistent.

So I'd wonder about Richie's phraseology: "Brunswick balls don't seem to absorb oil as well". Absorbing oil rapidly may not be the essential to good ball performance that he thinks it is. It may depend upon the actual coverstock and how it is meant/designed to work.

What i'm saying though is that oil thats
not absorbed into the cover can result
in the ball skidding and inconsistent shots.
I love my brunswick balls, i have 5 or 6
of them, i was just asking if its these
particular balls or if a lot of people
see this.

You could always just wipe it off...Besides, brunswick stuff is usually low rg so some extra skid isn't that bad.

Im not saying that Brunswick covers are bad
i love my B balls, im just asking if at
a certain point would it hinder the performance
Lack of oil abosorbtion is a good thing?

Soaker, Activator, Lanemasters stuff are the three best coverstocks for the lack of oil absorbtion.

-Chris

I totally agreed with Chris on the above statement about Activator coverstock !!

After the oNe....am now throwing a ZoNe that will vaporized the pins !!! I just love the reaction of my Vapor ZoNe...
