Nationals Arsenal
« on: April 13, 2011, 07:33:01 AM »
Hi Guys, just wondering if my arsenals is good for nationals. This past 4-5 months I actually had changed my approach from 9 stepper to 4 stepper. I made a change after having a weight loss surger back in OCTOBER. I was thinking of changing after nationals but i decided to do it before nationals. Anyways I'm getting hang of it just need to work on consistancy by squaring up to the line with my hips. Anyways here's my arsenal line up:

1.  SIEGE pin under ring stack

2.  3.5      "                              "

3.  ANACONDA pin under cg kicked out

4.  2.5 pin above ring finger stack

5.  AVALANCHE URETHANE pin under ring finger stack

6.  SPAREBALL BLUE DOT

I"m pretty much a down and in bowler now the way i'm bowling  since i changed my approach. I don't have a video of me yet with my new approach.

I don't know how you throw the ball, but that seems like a pretty good spread.  Might not need the 3.5 or Siege, since from everything I'm hearing, you don't need anything super aggressive...Just controllable down lane.  The lanes are hooking more than last year and I primarily used an Evil Seige on the fresh last year.  I would think your Anaconda might be enough ball for the fresh with the pin down position.

The 2.5 and the Urethane should be good for the singles and doubles burn.

We head there in two weeks and I think I'm going to leave my Alpha behind and stick to my Wicked on the fresh.  I'm taking 5 balls and I'm thinking of adding a pin down Loaded to my arsenal when I get there.

Andyman, I'm also going at the end of the month. 4-30 at 830 and 5-1 at 530 at night. Last year we bowled at 7am doubles singles. I hated it too early hahaha. I'll post a video soon. I'm gonna have my friend/coach to take a video of me bowling. But I'm excited to go to nationals again it's my second year. I'm not gonna expect much. As long As I can square up to my target and just stroke the ball and pick my spares. I'll do ok.

Actually, in my honest opinion, I'm concerned about the lower side of this aresenal. I think you have plenty of reaction options in the top half, but the bottom half lacks options. I don't really think that urethane is necessary at Nationals. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE my Avalance Urethane, but I don't think its the way to go when the length of the pattern is 41' and with a decent volume. There would have to be a lot of friction for a down and in bowler. I'm assuming that you are speed dominant due to the last statement. It's hard to help out without knowing your exact specs but I think a Karma Solid would better replace the Urethane Avalanche. Can't give a 100% certain recommendation without those specs but I'd think a pin above ring Karma Solid would work well and would give you more versitility out of the "5 hole" in the arsenal.

Also, I wouldnt be surprised if the Siege and the Anaconda provide the best looks in Reno for you, especially if the Anaconda is sanded slightly.

Brunswolf, sorry if it seems I'm q tually gonna use the avalanche urethane. I just decided to just list what I have. No I'm not speed dominant. I only throw like 11-12mph. Right now it's a toss up between  my siege and 3.5 at nationals along with my spare ball. If I have to bring is my anaconda. So I have four balls right there.

Actually you throw about 14-15 being the lanes are off about 2mph

I believe the shot's the same as last year with the exception that it's a foot longer this year.  For those who'd like to see this gentleman throw the ball, there's a YouTube video of him using the Roto Grip Grand Illusion.  Please type in the search box "kingpinproshop" and click on the appropriate ball :)

Have a nice day!

As far as your arsenal, i'd suggested that you bring a pin up over ring pearl ball as part of your weapons to go to Nationals this wknd.

I just returned from Reno on Sunday. Here's what I used:

2:30pm Team - Alpha Max with the exception of about 1/2 game with a dull Wild Card trying a different angle.

9:20am Doubles - Alpha Max for about a game, then Anaconda with no polish (approx.4000).

Singles - Anaconda for one game, then grn/blk Avalanche pearl (shiny) the balance.

I stayed between 13 and 17 at the arrows the entire tournament using the last marker (10) as my outside spot. There was still a definite O.B. outside and watched many bowlers with plenty of hand leaving washouts if they got it too wide.  Overall I averaged 198 with PLENTY of splits. I can't blame any equipment for those errant shots. I will be home from work tonight if anyone has any questions about what I was seeing.

Judging from what i'm seeing, I was going to bring more dull balls than pearls.  I've changed my mind and probably going 3 Pearls 2 Dull, and one of the Pearls i'll take the shine off and go 4000 and the dull balls i'll end up doing 1000 on 'em instead of the 800 gray pad i'm normally putting on 'em.

thus far: 1. Track 505A -4000 Abralon w/no polish

             2. The One Pearl - 1000 Abralon w/polish

             3. Siege - 800 gray pad then 1000 Abralon w/no polish

             4. Plague - 800 gray then 1000 then 2000 Abralon w/no polish

             5. The One - 800 gray then 1000 2000 4000 Abralon w/no polish

All are pin up near the bridge or above ring finger with variations with drilling from 50-70 x mostly 4 1/2" x 40-50

drills.

Too dull and you run the risk of the ball no carrying well. You may use it for about a game or so, then go to something weaker. The back ends are already giving you some hook so don't worry about creating hook.
For that same reason, if you have a pearl that is pin down it should be easier to control the last few feet of lane. The end of your doubles and singles you might want something weaker depending on your ball speed, etc. If you are good at following the shot further and further inside then you won't have any trouble unless you miss too far right.

Good luck when you bowl. The shot is very fair and that is why the scores are quite good this year. You still need to execute well, but you'll have a great time.

Great reply, which is exactly why i've changed my train of thought and go with pin up pearls.  I have been practicing that inside shot over center arrow break point at the 10 board range finder for months since last year's debacle where I frustrated myself continously trying to force an outside shot using ever conceivable hand and speed combination not to mention using every freaking ball I brought.

I guess the question is since i've got every VIBE (except the Emerald) with all of 'em pin up should I knock off the polish and go straight 4000 or 1000 w/polish?  If the backends are helping with entry I don't want to jump off the break point and dealing with excessive over/under like I did last year.

To lessen your chances with the over/under you will want to avoid polish, in my opinion. But it depends on what is underneath the finishing step. I like to go down to 500 then skip directly to the final step, whether it be 2000, 4000, or polish. With the abralon pads only use them for 30 seconds or so. That way you won't lose what the 500 did for the surface.

Pin up pearl reactives are by nature more skid/snap, which might get guys into trouble with the last 10 feet before the pins. If you add a little surface that will smooth out your reaction (and chances).  My polished Avalanche gave me a great look on the last two games of the tournament, but I liked the consistent read my non-polished equipment gave me up until then. I hope this helps.
