Brunswick booth at Reno next weekend? *Update! 5-6-07*
« on: April 26, 2007, 11:18:21 PM »
Hey, just curious as to who all I might see at the Brunswick booth in Reno next weekend.  Bowling on the 3rd and 4th, next Thursday and Friday.  Didn't know if a certain someone might be poking around with a video camera or not . .  Taking my Fury, Radical, Red Zone, and a Special Agent.  The plan as of now is to angle it off the corner from 5, walk it in with the angle to about 10 at the breakpoint, which just by the angle should put me around the pocket even if it doesn't hook, and I can adjust from there.  I don't want to go straight up a board or project it at all, wanna Norm Duke it, lol, it'll keep me out of trouble at least.  What have the conditions been like?  I saw the sheet, and it looks like it can be scored on decently enough, i just want to know how strong the backends are.

bruns4life (Jason Guest) is working the booth. You'll see him unless he off that shift.

Hampster,

I went last week.  Be careful about the line you're mentioning (5 board), unless you can get everyone to play there. Here's why: It will start off good, and in short time you will be trying to run through everyone's carrydown, OR, your hold area will disappear and you'll have to make a HUGE move left to find anything.

I found a good line straight up 11-12 board using a Fury that's about 1000 grit, and a Wizard also about the same.  On team I barely had to move a board.
I had third squad for doubles/singles so it was a little flaky, but there was still plenty of head oil, just horrible backends.

I asked for Jason Guest, too, but he had the day off. The other guy was very helpful and recommended the Fury somewhere between 1000 and 1500 (no polish).

I didn't use a single polished ball that I took, except my Fury #2 which is polished with rough buff. It hit like a ton, and may have been great if the backends were more consistent on D/S.  Hopefully your D/S squad is better than mine. Good luck.

Ask for Jason or Andy Shutt. If you talk to Andy tell him Kyle from Sioux Falls told you to ask for him.

Don't know if any of you had any dealings with Travis while he worked the booth a few years ago? Just to let any of you that dealt with him know him and his wife just had their second child last week. They now have a girl who is just about 3 and now Travis has his son as well.

Lane guy at one of the houses here in town was supposed to be putting down the Reno shot this morning . . I'm gonna call and see if he did, and if so, I'll be going out there shortly.  Bob Benoit was talking to a bunch of us about the shot, and that's basically what he said about playing outside or around 10.  Said it'd be playable for about a game, then you'd lose your shot.  I play in oil better than dry, and I think I'll be able to make the smart move, I just haven't bowled on a tight shot in a while, so I think execution is gonna be my challenge, like it is with most everybody.  We'll see, thanks for the advice!  Haha, I'll make sure to go talk to whoever's down there . .

I'll be there on Thursday, off on Friday. Scott is off on Thursday so you can't tease him about not closing the deal until Friday. He also likes to be called "The Corkster". The Brunswick bunch was just here bowling. Pat Mitchell had 734 in doubles and 761 in singles using a Fury with the pin above the ring at 4000 abralon. He was sliding just left of center and targeting around 10.

Bowled on two versions of the Reno shot.  One was on Anvilane, but the machine wasn't able to run all the passes, so what we got was a lot drier version that you could bounce 5 on . . didn't help a bit.  Got the real deal on resurfaced wood with Guardian yesterday.  It's very interesting changing from a house shot to a tougher shot, the things you need to do are totally different.  Very low first game trying different things, then I put up a 2-teen and some 2-0's, with a 170, 180 in there too.  I think this shot had stronger backends than we'll see in Reno, but it was definitely tight enough to be that shot.  I found something really nice from about 20-9 staying soft and using the Pete Weber float . .  I had 20-9 and 22-11 with my Red Zone, 20-7 with my Smokin, 20-5 with my Radical, and any one of those lines with my Fury depending on ball speed changes.  None of the other balls were able to react as well from the different lines.  When I moved outside it was very touchy, and when I moved inside it was very touchy.  Where I was playing was a direct enough line to easily keep me around the pocket, but had enough of the outside oil to get it down the lane.  The ball would move too soon if I played too much of the inside, and was very over/under if I played outside.  I was able to throw my shots the way I normally do, and even from the line I normally play, but I had to be softer and smoother, that way I didn't overhit it or send it too far right, but the reaction was there when I hit what I was aiming at.  Probably had about 3 boards to play with on the backend, 2 in the mids, and 1-2 in the heads.  If you miss in the heads, you might as well forget it, if you missed the mids, you might be ok, but if you hit the heads and mids and either got a little firm or a little soft, it seemed to be more forgiving, especially if you got firm as long as your speed/rev ratio was matched up and you didn't shoot it through the breakpoint.  All in all, it seems like a very good pattern to have out there.  Difficult enough to make you earn it, but very rewarding to consistency with a fair amount of forgiveness on shots you may miss by a little.  Looking forward to getting down there!

Haha, dropped by to ask Scott about things . . the look on his face when he found yet another person who is in on the joke, lmao.  Lol, he told me to give Jason some crap . . but I couldn't for the life of me understand what the hell he was talking about, kept saying what I thought was "baby birth," which didn't make any sense, but it was Baby RUTH . . something about a sloth and the goonies too . . lol, which I finally put together.  "You'll have to excuse my friend . . he's a little slow . ."

Grr . . shot wasn't what I expected, and it took me the team event to figure that out.  Started out playing 25-12.  Yeah, bad idea.  But I'd heard the shot was inside, and I figured the outsides would be flooded and the inside would be pretty dry.  The whole freakin lane was flooded.  Struggled to a 550 in team, couple chopped spares and 3 4-7-10's all in the wrong spot.  Used a Red Zone the first game, Fury the last two games, didn't have a good look with either of them.  Well, my plan changed after I went back to watch the singles/doubles squad later that day.  Started out singles and doubles playing 14-10 with my Red Zone, MUCH better line.  Naturally my second game everything went haywire enough to destroy my brackets, but I shot 638.  Next  set for singles was about the same, lanes were playing a bit straighter, so I was playing 12-10, the second game they transitioned slightly enough, and my only two single pin misses of the tournament were both in that game, again enough to knock me out of brackets, but I recovered for 590.  Ended up playing 18-12 because there was a very sweet shot that had developed in there.

I suppose 1777 isn't too bad for a first time at nationals, but there was an absolute trough from 16-10, and more than enough oil to keep you in the pocket as long as you didn't play too much of an angle.  I suppose I'm more disappointed in having those horrific second games that knocked me out of the brackets more than anything, I could have seriously cashed in (175 in doubles and 151 in singles, otherwise my first two games were 232 and 220, and my last two games were 231 and 219), and if I'd have just not listened to anybody and took what the lanes gave me, I'd have been a lot better off.  Also made the wrong moves in those second games . . should have moved left instead of right when the ball wasn't finishing, stupid house shot mentality.  Wish I could do it again, but I guess it's food for thought for next year.  Anybody who knows what they're doing and bowls a lot of regionals or on tough shots frequently should eat this shot up, it's pretty soft, and if I had it to do over again, I believe I could shoot 2000.  For the average joe though, I can see how 9 games isn't enough to get a handle on what you're doing enough to post something big.  Hopefully my PBA Experience league will help out this summer . . no house shots until August, thankfully!
