Are you a ball junkie?
« on: June 29, 2006, 12:34:33 PM »
Now that I have a good six ball arsenal for me (five balls for different conditions and a spare ball) I should be satisified.  But I probably won't be and will be looking for different balls, new balls, etc.  Why is this?  How does an otherwise normal person become a ball junkie?  And, is this a bad thing?

I'm a ball junkie and I can't freakin kick the habbit. I have 17 balls right now, but I have owned over 150 in the last 3 years. I think it really hurts your game b/c you never get used to just a couple balls and really know what they are gonna do. Its fun to see how different everything reacts, but by the time I half way know what the ball will and will not do, I get rid of it and buy more.

I own 80. Sold off about 20 on Ebay last year only to buy another 20 or so. I agree with a previous post that having so much equipment hurts your game. Of my 80 balls a good 25 or so are in play at one time or another. Ball selection for tournaments is confusing as hell and I intend to sell off a great deal of them this coming August.

Oh good, I thought it was just me.  I hover between 30 and 40 balls.  Completely agree with having too many balls hurts your game.  I throw a different ball in league every week.  May not be the best ball for the condition, but I throw it anyway........

Hey Austin I do that too.  I only have 10, even though five usually carries me through any tournaments I go to and 2 is plenty for league.  I have 10.  But, I carry a different ball with me to league each week, otherwise I feel like I'm neglecting my children.
Like tomorrow night I'm bowling a local 9 pin sweeper. It's not a big money sweeper but its fun.  I'm only taking my Big Hit and my spare ball mainly because I haven't used that ball in a long time plus I want to practice playing up the boards on the outside.  Besides with it being a 9 pin I only have to get the ball to the pocket.

Hmmm, look at my profile. These are too many to my taste. I got most of them used through ebay, quite cheap, and should get rid of some. But the only ball that is really oblivious is the TPC Player, and I am uncertain about the Pure Hammer, even though it is brand new.

I like having a greater arsenal with overlapping balls, in order to have different lane reactions on a given condition, and fall-back options if a ball is at the pro shop (Which takes some time in my case, since the shop is located in another city).

I think it is good to have a basic assortment, and 4-5 balls plus a spare should cover anything. But, it takes time and testing to know how you play, what works for you, and how it should be set up to make a good and versatile arsenal. This will leave you with some excess balls. It is just the question if you want to get rid of them, or, like me, keep them for whatever case there might occur...

I never get a ball just to get a ball. I normally get one for a reaction I think would help me out. But I have splurged a couple times and got things I prolly could have done with out.

I had 8 bowling balls that I brought with me to all tournaments. Never all to leagues. After changing to switch-grips about 2 months ago and a different size span it has cut my arsenal down to 6. I thought the cut back would help me out, and let me get more familar with each ball and learn to ADJUST lines instead of changing balls.

Im a ball junkie but not a hardcore junkie. My ball list is in my profile. I have i think 9 balls total. I keep with me at all times these following:

Multi-colored stripe plastic - extreme dry/spares
Smokin Inferno - Dry lanes
The One - Medium dry
Big One - Medium heavy
Scorchin Inferno - Heavy oil

The balls that I dont need but experiment with from time to time:

Track Freak (bananza 300 blem)
Storm Re-Loaded
Columbia 300 TI Messenger

The newest ball I own but not ready to use:

Ebonite V2 Sweet

The balls I no longer use:

Brunswick Black Sparkle plastic
Brunswick Zone Pro-active (maroon)
Storm Eraser (the original non-partical)

Thats a total of 12 balls that I have. I dont use them all but I have em.

I am a ball junkie and proud of it. I have people ask me why I need another ball? To which I generally reply "everyone collects something, I just happen to collect bowling balls. I guess I'm probably pretty close to 30 balls by now.
I generally buy used stuff either through this and other bowling sites or ebay.
I usually will not pay more than $40 shipped to me for a ball. At these kind of prices I do not feel bad about have a couple extra balls sitting around.
My proshop buddie gives me great deals on plugging and redrilling so I'm not out that much on these.

It is just nice to have something new once and a while. I can afford it so why not?

I sell 1 and drill 3 more. I currently have of Brunswick:

Inferno
Smokin' Inferno
Absolute Inferno (until the guy who won the ebay auction pays me)
Zone Classic
Impulse Zone (will plug and redrill to keep one solid particle ball)
Nemesis (going to ebay next)
Rampage
Ambush
Power Groove (soon to ebay for $1)
All White Viz Spare

Once the Absolute, Nemesis and PG are gone I will drill:
Monster Brusier (got from a fellow lefty)
Ultimate Inferno (sold old one, drill a new one)
Red Zone
Radical Inferno
Classic Zone (another)
Urethane Groove (for the Petersen in Chicago)

So in other words.....JUNKIE!

Laner

I have an itch....need drill press and bowling ball.....
