Arsenal for El Paso

Okay, ladies and gentlemen, I'm about two weeks away from heading to El Paso for the Open Championships. At this point, I have a pretty good idea as to the six balls that will be making the trip with me; nevertheless, I always like to hear what you fine folks have to say.

I have two 3-ball rollers that will travel, so the arsenal will be 5 plus a plastic spare ball. Here are my options:

Mastermind
Mastermind Intellect
Mastermind Genius
DV8 Brutal Nightmare
Melee Cross
Melee
Melee Jab
Strike King

My initial thought is to go as follows:

Mastermind (2000)
Intellect (1500)
Melee Cross (500/2000)
Melee (Box - maybe a touch of the shine knocked off)
Melee Jab (2000 plus polish)
T-Zone

That would mean leaving out the Genius, Brutal Nightmare, and Strike King. Any thoughts on these options - before you say it, yes, I know it's hard to truly make suggestions without having seen me bowl. This is more just taking a stab stuff.

If I was going, I would go Moxie@2000, Darkness@2000, King Cobra@4000, Night Hawk@4000 and All Day@4000. Maybe my Grip-it @2000 with polish.

We went and symmetrical balls with surface worked best, the harder you throw, the more surface you need, don't be afraid to go all the way down to 1000 if you gas the ball. Currently in 10th place in team. IMO breaking them down right of 5 is the way to go.

My teammates are good bowlers/smart guys, but some of them are afraid when the ball looks gritty. lol Then again, a couple of them rip the cover off of the ball, so they're always worried about anything that has the potential to create early hook on them.

As of me, I'm pretty much a medium speed tweener. My revs may be a tad higher than the average, but I'm not a cranker by any means. As such, for surfaces, I have fresh 2000 on my Mastermind, 1500 on my Intellect, 500/2000 on my Melee Cross, 1500 (plus lane shine) on my Melee, and 2000 plus polish on my Melee Jab.

Take sandpaper with you.  Unless the rules prohibit, you can adjust the surface until the first ball is thrown in competition.  It doesn't take long to do an adjustment by hand.  --  JohnP

That actually just changed this year.  I just got back from El Paso, we checked directly with the staff.  You can now adjust your surface until the bell rings.

That's a huge change from previous years and it's about time they allowed it. Time to invest in that turbo sandbagger.

Yep, the previous guy said it changed this year. In previous years, they mentioned it a couple of times in the squad room that no changes could be made once on the lanes.

I seem to remember something about it happening last year in one of Riggs 11th Frame columns and people making a big deal about it.

I'm awaiting confirmation on the rules change - being allowed to alter surface until the bell rings - right now; however, I do remember from my time working there being told that at least part of the reason why they disallowed it in the first place was due to lack of bowler courtesy. People were hammering down on balls with sandpaper/scotchbrite and getting everything covered in dust/powder, which would then get onto everyone's shoes and onto the approaches, making things dirty and dangerous for everyone. I'm sure the same concern is there with rosin/powders. If people keep that stuff self-contained and away from everyone/everything else, I'm sure it's not a problem.

I just got the confirmation that, yes, you are now allowed to change the surface of balls up until the bell rings, so it looks like I'll actually have a reason to bring some abralon pads this time around.

just verified it on bowl.com.
you may alter a surface up to the starting point of competition.
(competition is defined as when you start bowling for score)
you may alter surfaces in practice before team & doubles. you may not touch any surface after that. not between double's & single's either.
