You're probably just seeing the result of carrydown and some light oil in the heads. I know in my home house many times the lanes tighten up for my more aggresive equipment as the pattern breaks down. This is because the strong coverstocks bleed off a little more energy in the heads, then hit the carrydown and just kind of make a weak arc into the pocket. This at some point will usually resemble the reaction on the fresh.

My Smokin kinda seems the same way.  I have a Classic Zone Red Pin that acts two completely different ways at the houses I bowl at.  One is more of a flat pattern with HEAVY oil up front and flying backends (on Laneshield).  My Classic Zone I can play from 3rd arrow and deeper when the lanes start to burn.  My Smokin plays about the same spot and isn't quite as sensitive to the transition.  At the other house on synthetics where the pattern is shorter and drier (but on synthetics) my Classic Zone won't hardly do a thing.  However, my Smokin reacts about the same as at the other house, about 3rd arrow out to 8 and and a nice hard arc back in.  It's just a flat out awesome ball.  The only other ball I had that would play every condition I threw at it was my El Nino X-IT.  Don't know how, but it'd play wet stuff and bone dry stuff.

The house I bowl at doesn't wall the shot.  The regulars are all down and in...so they all play a trackline down 10.  There always oil on the outside normally making anything going outside of the 1st arrow dead.  

I know for certain from the employees there that they don't lay a shot down on Sundays.  During the summer, lane maitenence here is at the minimum level.  Hence theres tons of ball damage and at least 4 lanes down with problems daily.    

Like I mentioned, I've played this ball varying shots at different houses with the same result.  The ball always skids down, and makes a clean turn into pocket whether there is a wall there or not.

Today I tested the ball out on another fresh shot, this time it was walled, and yes, I was bouncing off it and hitting pocket.  Same result, just much easier to accomplish.

I've been able to throw most of my equipment on the shot at my home lanes, and the Smokin is still the strongest ball I have.  Granted, this is based off the backend reaction since I like my equipment to have a skid/snap reaction-and i judge the strength off that standard.  

All in all, I'm just very pleased with the outcome of this ball.  I have tried the original and the absolute, and despite their rave reviews, for me, the Smokin has worked wonders.
