Avalanche Pearl vs. Solid

buddy of mine is looking for his first hooking ball and the Avalanche Pearl came into mind. Is there much of a difference between the Pearl and the Solid? He throws a 13 lb around 14 mph. Our house is light medium in oil an only 36 ft. long. Would the pearl be the better choice?

Could be either one, depending on how much hand he ends up having.  I know a lot of people, when they start throwing a fingertip-drilled hooking ball have very weak releases.  Low track, low revs, low speed because they aren't used to using the muscles you need for a more powerful release.  Some take right to it with a decent release.  If the former, he might like the solid better as it'll hook more and new bowlers want to see the ball move at least a little bit (even if he's not crossing 40 boards).  The pearl might just slide and never really do much.  If he's got a better release, the pearl should be fine for a medium-light house shot.

we practiced yesterday with a house ball and it was moving  little bit i don't think he will have problems adapting to a new release which will provide more hook. Buut i think were going to go with a weaker drill beings it is the first hooking ball, so i am leaning towards the solid for him, agreed?

what in the world do you use for a 36ft shot?  we have a 40ft house shot and mine snaps back.  couldnt imagine any less.

For your answer, neither.  The Pearl is going to be too flippy and the solid will probably be too early.

I would probably go with the Rampage and keep it polished.  It is a little less flippy at the break point and strong enough for someone with a weak hand.  Very good ball for beginners and intermediate bowlers.

The Avalanche Pearl has a core/cover combination that makes it touchy and angular at the break point, especially for people who tend to "spin" the ball a bit.  If one has pretty good speed control, the ball is controllable, but for most average beginners and intermediate bowlers, a slightly stronger pearl that wants to roll a bit earlier (and thus more consistently) is a better bet.  For that reason, I suggested the Rampage.

After a few practice sessions with my avalanche pearl i have to say it is GREAT. Bowling on light carrydown, after league and general open bowling conditions. My speed is on the slower side, 15-16 mph on a good day, and i get a little more hand into the ball, 300ish rpm.

Matches up percent for me, although it is a bit much for the ths condition with the oob surface. It plays very over/under for me there, i don't like the reaction i see. Surface adjustment should solve that. I like the spot it is in, and may seek other options. Ric you have pm sir.

Pin under ring, 45* layout, x-hole down on the val. Roughly a 4 1/2" pin to pap for me.

ya this will be my friends first reacting ball, i just don't want him to have a bad experience. He needs something that will hook but not be to much to handle. he throws only around 13.5-14. I like the solid idea on the basis it will be more versatile (handle some more oil) and wont be real snappy on the back like the pearl would be. Also, because of this ball speed, would the solid roll to early? with his slow ball speed would you want to drill it to go long? thanks for helping me out.
