Avalanche Urethane comments
« on: November 02, 2010, 03:20:47 PM »
I just started using it yesterday in practice and tonight in league. So far, this is the least urethane acting urethane ball I have thrown. Its hit and carry and, partially, its hooking action are more closely related to resin than to the other urethanes (Seismic Desperado and AMF Hype Urethane) that I have thrown recently. It is more urethane reacting than my Slingshot which is, oddly, the most urethane-like resin ball I have thrown, including the Visionary Blue/Green Centaur, which was the previous favorite.

When the lanes transition to drier, my Slingshot can get a little bit too much backend. The AU stays its even keel, so to speak, and behaves more like its urethane heritage. It also has a small bit more of a resin-like behavior, in that it will hold more than the other urethanes I have tried when pulled inside and it will also hook a little more, like a resin, when swung further out into the dry.

Overall I like it a lot. The Slingshot and the Avalanche Urethane make and interesting pairing, even if they're not 100% complementary. I suspect the Avalanche Slide and the Avalanche Urethane will be more complementary on light oil.

Like the reviews in BTM and BJI as long as there is enough dry outside (90% of all house patterns) you can use the ball to play outside while others are using stronger balls and burning up the track and forcing themselves to change balls and lines and release. Once you find a line and a release for this ball, you rarely seem to have to move much at all. I had to move more with the SS and deeper than I have, so far, (fingers crossed) with the AU.

Aside from "operator error", this ball has few faults as long as you have enough revs and not high ball speed. I drilled mine a little weaker (pin over center of bridge) than my SlingShot (pin over ring finger). I made a lucky guess and both work well for me, when I throw the ball kind of well ...

Sold another one yesterday to a guy from Clear Lake, Laddie!  Yeah, you would like this ball on toast.  Agree with Charlest, has just little more pop on the back end than 20 year old urethane.

Nothing wrong with 20 year-old urethane lol.  Love my Blue Hammer!

But I don''t see how anybody can go wrong with this ball.  Proven core and urethane cover.

I wonder what layout do all of you guys are using? I want to get it for dry lanes? thanks.

Saw my first AU in action yesterday in league, ona thinly oiled lane. Could not see the layout, player was a low speed/higher revs guy, and the ball looked pretty smooth and controllable overall - but not as weak as one would expect from a urethane piece.

It seemed to read the lane rather early and do a steady banana curve - more than its user expected or wanted... From what I have seen you should not underestimate this ball's traction. I think for a true dry lane ball, you need a long/weak layout. It definitively is stronger than an old Blue Hammer or something similar.
