Ball Speed
« on: February 24, 2005, 02:47:40 AM »
This isn't exactly Big B related, but I value your opinions.

I have a severe problem with ball speed.  For the most part, I can control it, but I'm going to ABCs in 6 weeks, and from what I've noticed while practicing on the condition is that at points I tend to blow through the break point (simillar to how Mika left missed the BP and hit light on his fill and in the roll off in the US Open last week).  I slightly more hand than Mika, but the ball speed is up there.

Anyone have any tips or suggestions as to how I can slow the speed down?

Thanx.

Two basic things are 1.) lower the ball in your stance 2.) move up on the approach.

After that, I'm not much help. I'm sure others have more advanced advice.

Move up and take less steps, or throw an 18lb ball.

i've considered putting 2 pounds of lead in my ball, but someone told me that it might be illegal, so i didn't do it.

Try lowering your starting point so that the swing is lower. Instead of going for a high back swing, go for a mid-high swing and work from there. And at the same time, slow down the approach.

Swing & approach speed goes hand-in-hand.

Take less steps and/or lower the ball in your setup.

You might be the first person in the history of the sport to tell someone to hold the ball higher in order to LOWER ball speed.

Overall, I tend to muscle the ball a bit.  It doesn't matter how slow my first 2 or 3 steps are, at the peak of my swing, I can feel my arm lock and I force the ball down.  It's nothing more than a bad habit.  Do I WANT to do it?  NO.  Do I NEED to STOP it?  YES.
