ball surface
« on: December 10, 2014, 11:45:28 PM »
I have a question about ball surface on Brunswick equipment, I have a aura mystic and a mastermind, both are polished. I am having problems with both hooking way to much and kinda of inconsistent, would taking surface down actually make them hook less because they are burning up sooner or not storing as much energy.

Not usually.
Taking the surface from polished (normally in the 5000+ grit range) to 3000 or 4000 grit will make the ball hook earlier and be more consistent, but it will tend to hook slightly more overall. Not a lot, but as you go down in grit numbers (rougher surface), the ball will hook earlier and earlier and require more oil to conserve energy. However at 4000 grit, the increase in hook will generally be minimal. It's a good and safe first step.

Like charlest said, if you just take a 4000 pad to what the current surface is now with the polish, it would be a little smoother reaction overall.

If they are hooking way too much downlane, then putting surface on the ball will cause it to be smoother on the back. If they are hooking too much overall, then a surface adjustment might help by using up some of the energy earlier and not storing it.

If it is too much overall hook, then you could use 500-2000-rough buff or royal compound to help smooth out the 500 underlying grit. And, if it is still too much, then you could use 500-1000-2000-rough buff or royal compound. Using the Royal compound, it won't snap as hard compared to polishing it because it has about a 3000 grit surface in the formula.

I hit my mastermind with 4000 pad before league Friday, didn't seem to change it too much but as night went on I noticed that it was much smoother and calmer off the spot much more controllable.
