Title: Brawler vs Torrid Elite and Yeti vs Ringer
Post by: Jason Kovack on March 27, 2013, 04:45:16 PM
Had a few requests to see these comparisons after the last set of videos so here they are.  Motion Hole video will be coming soon and hopefully some DV8 comparisons with the Brunswick and Radicals... I know I wanna see The Misfits vs The Ringer.  Enjoy!!

Once again, top notch videos!  And I can't believe how dast you responded to everyone here by cranking these out.  Thanks!

This confirmed for me that with my Ringer there is no need to get a Yeti.  But I see a Radical ball in my future.

Looks good. Just curious did something change that I miss on the Yeti Ringer video? At the end they went from being about 5-6 boards different to being within a board or two of each other.

Is the RINGER  a dry lane ball...
Strange - The videos is show the ball on 41ft pattern and the ball is moving...
Was I the only person who saw that

I was wondering the same thing.

The videos are very well done. Thank you, Jason.

I understand about the different drillings: Yeti & Ringer. What's most interesting is the
similarity, when the same line is played. So if the Yeti had the same drilling, it would probably start up earlier, with more overall hook, showing it's a little stronger coverstock, at a minimum.

The Brawler/Elite video shows the solid/pearl cover on the Brawler let's it hook more overall, with the same breakpoint shape, on that oil pattern, with the Elite, being all pearl, hitting the dry a little earlier.

All the videos in all the comparison vids were shot on the same day at the same time.  We were able to get them out quick because its all the same clips, just layed over one another for comparison.  In my opinion, Ringer hooks alot more than most balls at that price point.  Yeti is still more hook overall and downlane.  The last shots on the Ringer and Yeti were at the end of the session as the lanes opened up a bit.  To me this is really where the Ringer shines.  I would not say these were dry at all but the outside were opened more.  I do try to play a few angles with each ball in the videos.  The Ringer did allow me to move quite a bit more left than most balls.  Hope this clears up the difference in the shots.

I have a ringer drilled pin over bridge and cg in palm and the thing hooks as much as any ball I have.  Outhooks my aura drilled the same way.  It is uncontrollable and erratic, tried different surfaces and hated them all.  I love my aura and brawler but hate the ringer.  Wont carry when you hit the hole, worse ball I have owned.

My experience with the Ringer has been the polar opposite.  Like you, I love my Aura and Meanstreak (OG, not the Brawler).  The Ringer is strong as you report, but I get excellent carry with mine.  Great ball for me.

I think more than anything else, the Ringer needs a pretty decent amount of head oil, especially for a lower end (price) pearl.  I just did something with mine I thought I'd never do again - sanded the ball to 1000 abralon and applied a coat of Bean's Special Sauce.  In the past the stuff made any ball a dart for me (even though many of my friends liked it).  3000 abralon and Snake Oil wasn't much different than the factory surface, so that's the next thing I can think of.  I'm going to try to get to the lanes tomorrow and get some footage of the Yeti on a house shot, and I'm anxious to see what the Ringer will look like.

Geoff,

What kind of reaction are you getting and where would you like to go?
Note sure any of those are radically different from the other.

I was wondering the same thing. Coincidentally, I was going to try 1000/secret sauce on mine.  I am amazed that this ball comes in at the price point it is.  It is very strong on the backend.

I want something a lot cleaner through the front part of the lane than what I got from the box surface.  The first league night I had a nice reaction.  At the other places I tried it, it wsa using up too much energy way too early.  I thought the (hopefully) finer sanding (3000 abralon, compared to whatever 500 abralon + Rough Buff is) before the polish would get me more length.  I don't have any High Gloss Polish, and I like Snake Oil, so I thought it was worth a shot.  Like I said earlier, I always got a much tamer reaction from Bean's Sauce than I ever wanted.  Hopefully, now that will be a good thing.

As far as I can tell, from personal experience, what 500 grit + Rough Buff will get you is determined a lot by how much RB you apply, how hard you press and for how long. The abrasive breaks down into finer and finer particles. So you could get any where from 3000 to 5000 grit; but once you get above 4000 grit, the surface begins to shine and RB acts like a true polish.

I'd suggest sanding to 4000 grit and adding Snake Oil on top of that. Like all polishes, the more you apply, the higher the gloss level of the polish and the finer the surface gets. Snake Oil just allows you to get there slower in finer steps than more abrasive polishes.

Although Beans recommended, for normal use, to use no finer than 1000 grit under Secret Sauce, you could, if you want even more length and a finer surface. It's one of the few polishes that have enough abrasive to polish urethane balls.

I have to say, Jason, you produce the nicest, most informative ball videos I have ever seen.  Thank you.

Thanks so much guys.  I really love this game and love helping people.  Im glad I can give a good insight to the new equipment.

I took some initial footage of the Yeti and Ringer today.  I used an older Flip Video camera on the left lane and a digital camera that takes high def video on the right.  Not many places good to put a camera with a mini tripod.  The Flip video looks decent, but I had the camera too far away to see much detail.  I was maxed out on optical zoom - trying not to use digital because it can look grainy.  Plus the camera shut off a few times, probably timed out or a battery saving feature.  At least I learned something before shooting more.  Chameleon will be out for practice Sunday, so I'll see what I can do.

The Ringer was the factory Rough Buff (then High Gloss Polish), so I have no idea how aggressive it was applied.  I already had 3000 + Snake Oil so I didn't think 4000 first would have made a large difference.  I used the Secret Sauce today and was encouraged by what I saw.  When I was further inside with the Yeti it had a hard time turning the corner, so this place might have more head oil than where I've been throwing the Ringer.  I only bowl here for the sport shot; I've never bowled on their house shot before today.

Trial and error.  Video is a great tool not only for seeing ball reaction but also to watch yourself bowl.  Its easy for someone to tell you what you're doing but its another to actually see it.
