AI Ball Care
« on: September 16, 2005, 11:44:46 AM »
Hey,
I was just wondering, because I live in Australia, and there's no heating equipment available at any pro shops I know, what other methods (besides wiping ball down, polish and resurface) are there to get rid of the oil for AIs?

Warm soapy water, almost as hot as you can stand to put your hand into.  15 in, 30 out, about 3 times, works great.

Keep looking... I'm sure there's a 300 in one of those balls you keep buying!!

YOu know better than to "just" say that; you've got to include all the warnings!!

The machine designed to bake balls insures the inside  temperature never rises about 150 degrees Fahrenheit. That's roughly the temp where ("they say") the plasticizer begins to come out instead of just the lane oil.

You can't rely on the thermostat inside a house oven to be accurate. You have to use an separate thermometer and you have to check the ball every 15 minutes or so. You have to place it on a tray of some sort that will catch the dripping oil. You have to wipe it off every 10 - 15 minutes.

Even then it's not recommended. The vapors given off by lane oil are probably toxic when heated. I'm sure your wife, mother or girlfriend will react very negatively and rightly so if they learn you've been doing something so dumb!
