Brunswick loses Ballard and Nation
« on: April 24, 2011, 01:05:20 PM »
anyone notice that Ballard and Nation are leading the queens but not using Brunswick.  Ballard used Roto Grip (kinda funny with Del being with Ebonite)  and Nation is using Track.  Whos next to fall off the Brunswick wagon.....Bohn??

Raceway Lanes FOREVER!!! ROYAL PIN You ARE WHATS WRONG IN INDY!!!!
high score: 300 (1/10/07 Tropical Storm)

IMO Brunswick hasn't been making quality pieces for modern lane conditions in a few years.  Yes there are exceptions, but for the most part the covers read the lane way too early and the balls lack continuation.  It seems like most of them are meant to be thrown on straighter angles....which only works for so long on just about any pattern.

Brunswick has been know to drop staff players and regroup. Women bowlers don't get a lot of TV time so I doubt they were too concerned in letting them go. As popular as the PBA is I know the ratings for women bowling the Queens will be stellar.

As far as the roll early statement.....it never stops being funny.

Just curious, what is the last piece you've thrown because I have no problems whatsoever covering boards with Big B.  The Alpha and Wicked are probably the best combo I've had in years.  Anaconda. 2.5 and Revolver's aren't slouches either.  None of them "read the lane way too early" nor do I have any issues with continuation.

Ballard used to be on Ebonite staff for a long time. I think she won most of her PWBA titles using Ebonite balls. THEN she went to Brunswick. I suspect she had some falling out with them. Otherwise, I'm sure Del would have had her using his company's balls.

I agree, "b" balls are a lot better than they were. Just took 1st @ Nevada state open (doubles) with an axis drilled Fury. I ws NOT throwing it  "up the boards".

and this is why bowling is in the toilet....noone understands ball motion anymore....in most cases not even those that are drilling the balls.  An "up the boards" motion doesn't mean that you can't hook them...I never said they don't hook.  I can take any ball and play 5th arrow with it....it doesn't mean I can consistently get corner pins out with it.

I have thrown plenty of Brunswick stuff over the years, and one of my good friends was a staff member until a year ago (he still gets to throw all of the new stuff).  Yes they have some good pieces (Wicked Siege, Loaded Revolver, to name a couple), but OVERALL the balls underperform against market equivelants.

Just because you struck with a ball doesn't mean it's a great piece.  I shot my highest series ever with a Pearl Mica Beast....that doesn't mean it's the ball for everyone.

Russell, I am anything but a Brunswick lover, but I think you have to give them their due. They have come out with several good pieces in the last few years, a vast improvement over such duds as the Fury. The improvement  started around the release of the 2.5. They seem to have discovered mid to high RG cores. Also some of Big B's problem has been advertising balls as hook monsters when they are in reality good medium balls (Twisted Fury, 4.5).

As to the OP's original point, since both bowlers were fairly successful using Brunswick, I would theorize that the switch represents a purely business decision ($) for  one or both parties.

Don't worry, I understand ball motion.  I will simply say this, I was on Roto Staff the past 3 years.  The current Brunswick lineup (and a few past like the Wild Thing, Wild Card, Siege, Evil Siege) perform as well if not better.

Because you can play 5th arrow and not carry doesn't mean it is the equipment. I've thrown plenty of Brunswick that goes long and hooks. It also finishes on the backend and carries. It must be magic, like trying to get more then 50 games out of an Ebonite ball.,

Actually, many people have known that Ballard and Nation have not been with Brunswick for some time now........it's kind-of old news.

I had one of my best years EVER this year and have used all of the C-System series( except the alpha max ), the Wicked Siege,  and the Slingshot. Everyone of these pieces of equipment has their place and work great when used correctly. I'd say Brunswick equipment has never been better than it is right now.

It is marketing, joe bowler wants 100/100 hook and 100/100 backend.  Unfortunately that is only 2 markets.

I'd be curious to see what would happen if B marketed a ball to not hook out of the building or go sideways at the backend, highlighting it to be 100/100 length or 100/100 control and explain how that would help a bowler.

+1 .... Charlest is right. Ballard did win most of her titles using Ebonite.
