Title: Brunswick medium to lighter oil options
Post by: J_w73 on March 23, 2010, 04:54:53 PM: Looking for a couple of medium to lighter oil brunswick balls. One that is smooth and controllable and one that is pretty angular..
I'm assuming atleast one of the avalanches but don't know if two different ones can fill the bill

the avalanche green and black sounds like it is money.. but I don't know where to go from there..
I'm also not sure what the reaction of the slingshot will be.. I read it was supposed to be rolly and controlled..

I'm thinking that the rattler should complement my Sidewinder that I already have..

Post by: dizzyfugu on March 24, 2010, 03:19:28 AM: For a smooth piece, the new Slingshots look promising - due to the low differential. Their RG is also rather high, so I'd expect them to push easy down the lane. The reaction might look rolly or not spectacular, but I think these will make good short oil balls.

For a flippy touch, my vote would go to the Python or a Twisted Fury Pearl. Their cover pushes easily through the heads, even with little oil, and the cover reacts strongly to dry boards. Personally, I'd prefer the TFP due to the lower diff, higher RG and also the mass bias of the core.

The Avalanche G/B should IMHO fall between them, a good (better?) allrounder.

figure I could drill the sling shot to be smooth and put the pin up on the avalanche and get some flip out of it.

thanks for the suggestion of the python and fury but I am looking for a truly weaker cover for medium - medium dry conditions..

Post by: dizzyfugu on March 24, 2010, 04:02:47 AM: From what I can tell, the EnMotion stuff is very effective on drier shots - I had a Smash Zone and was amazed how good the cover would cope with little oil, less than I ever expected. The material shows a strong reaction when the ball hits the dry, though, so control could become a serious issue - that's why I'd vote for a TFP. But I'd consider it for medium to medium-dry shots, because of the great length it offers in the front part of the lane.

Post by: Gazoo on March 24, 2010, 08:10:29 AM: Everyone seems to have forgotten about the Avalanche Solid. That ball is smooth with great hit on medium to med-dry conditions for many bowlers. Can't beat the PK18 coverstock as well. Easily adjustable as needed.

I think right now my two options are

avalanche solid (pin down) and avalanche slide (pin up)

or Slingshot (pin down ) and avalanche green/black (pin up)

I think the second option may leave a big gap between my avalanche and my sidewinder.. brunswick doesn't really have anything in the middle there , other than the Avalanche solid. so the solid slide combo may be the way to go

You may be on the right path, yet my 4.5 to axis pin down solid is still pretty strong downlane, therefore I hit it with a little bit of surface to smooth it out. I have two black/greens, one with pin 3-3/4 from axis, and is probably the most versatile ball I have ever thrown. Extremely predictable. I also have one pin up 5" from axis that is great when the track is blown out.

Personally, I don't think you can go wrong with anything in the avalanche line. My personal recommendation would be the blk/grn pearl at 3-1/2-4" pin to pap, and an avalanche slide 5 or so inches pin high(25-35 deg val angle).

Post by: charlest on March 24, 2010, 10:46:36 AM: I know the Avalanche Green/Black (PK 18 pearl) will handle medium-light to medium oil. Mine was pretty smooth.

I've told (over and over and over again) that the Slide is both more angular and intended for much lighter oil. So I expect it handles ligh tot medium-light oil. Pin high should provide lots of backend with your rev rate.

Avalanche Solid is not for lighter oil unless you both drill it weak AND change the surface. The Green/Black is surpringly strong for such a mild core but weaker than the solid.

FWIW I would have bought a Slide by now if I didn't already have an equivalent ball that I like a lot (Storm Hot Rod Pearl).

The next step down for me is a Sling shot. If that ball see's a drop of oil down lane it runs and hides! Great ball on light conditions though.

say both with pin in the palm (5.5" from pap) no hole
