Which ball?
« on: July 24, 2006, 06:28:53 AM »
Crosspost from my other thread.

The bowling pattern for this weekends tourney was PBAs Senior Tour Pattern #2.  Practially everyone was playing it down and in.  Burned up the outside line pretty  quickly.  I was playing consistently up 15 the first 3 games with my StrikeZone.  Then the heads burned up by the 1st match play and were worse for the 2nd.

As I stated earlier, I should have switched balls (I think).  I had a TimeZone and a Tsunami.  Or even the VaporZone (polished).

Should I have switched to a higher RG ball to get through the heads cleaner or should I have moved further left and played a more inside line.

Just looking for a general answer based on personal experience.

I would have switched balls.  I'm not good at getting deep and getting the ball to make the turn in a timely fashion.  I don't know about a higher-RG ball to get through the heads, but something weaker, like the Dry/R or Punisher (which are both higher-RG than the Inferno/Zone series anyway) might've let you stay put longer.

But that's only if you don't mind getting dirty looks from the "good bowlers make adjustments, they don't need a truckload of balls" crowd or the "back in my day, we only had one ball" crowd.

Most of the seasoned bowlers there bring at least 6 to 10 balls.  I had 6:

StrikeZone (benchmark ball)
Absolute Inferno (thumb too tight)
Zone Classic (spares or really dry conditions)
Monster SlayR (old favorite for very dry lanes)
TimeZone
Lane#1 Tsunami

My TimeZone and Tsunami are polished so I think one of them would have been a good choice.  Skid through the heads and snap on the dry back ends.

My Classic and SlayR are drilled weak.  I put the Classic down on the 3 board and it couldn't make it back to the pocket.  By the way, I'm moderate on the revs and roll about 15 mph average.  Smooth stroker style with a dash of chicken wing when my timing is off.

Should have some new vids up soon.

Regional #2 is a block pattern 6 board to 6 board.  If you were playing inside, you were playing where it was flat.  This couldn't have given you much room for error.  I would have done whatever I had to do to get the ball out to 5 board at 36 ft.  If you line up correctly with the right ball, you should have 7 board to the gutter to hit and still get to the pocket.

I was trying to get the ball out further.  Just wasn't working for me.  I actually used my TimeZone for the last few shots and boom - pocket every time.

I guess I could/should have changed my target.  *takes notes*
