In my opinion (again) you should try a pin down layout, and maybe even closer to your PAP to really smooth out the late reaction. From what I'm understanding, you're seeing LOTS of friction.
By going pin above it just makes the reaction more angular (and less predictable) when there's enough dry. Both mt Rattler (Rico) and my Python (4" from PAP and below) are both very strong, yet not jumpy on the back end.
The Python is a bit faster to read friction than the Smash, so you may want to try the new Avalanche Pearl (green-black). The PK18 cover is an all-time favorite and the core helps keep it under control. Great ball at a great price! If you go this route, you'll want it drilled pretty strong, due to the low differential core. Good luck.
