btu vs storm mix
« on: April 04, 2017, 01:00:16 PM »
i am doing the no thumb bowling this year and the storm mix is
my best option. dont know ball speed but it is at about 2.9 seconds
to get down the lane. will a btu be a good match to my mix?
looking to stay outside if at all possible. my mix about 12 to 5 at break point
i can get to pocket but not the best carry.
Thanks

I'm a fellow no-thumber, and I prefer playing straight as well. Here is what I can tell you about the BTU. First of all, it took me a while to get along with this ball. Out of the box, I really didn't like it. It seemed allergic to oil, yet it actually came off the dry pretty darn hard. After doing some surface adjustments, I finally settled on a 500-grit surface. At that surface, I get it to read the lane a little bit up front (still not grabby by any means), and it offers a strong backend, but nothings as violent as I saw in the beginning.

In regard to the ball being better than urethane, I'm not so sure. It is different than urethane. It's definitely much cleaner up front and more powerful down the lane. However, I find that I have to play the right kind of shot to make the ball work. For me, I've had the most success playing tight lines up the lane on and making sure not to get it to the dry too quickly. If I do, it still tends to come off of the spot a bit harder than I'd care for in most instances.

Still, I do think that it could pair up nicely with a mix. I think the BTU would be nice for when you need a little less grab early and a little more pop late. Just be wary that if you're throwing no thumb, this ball WILL hook when it finds dry.

Gene,

I had the same experience with mine, and I gave it away, I just stay with urethane, it's a better reaction overall for me.

well i thinking i just might like a urethane ball. that has different core.
then the mix
i dont think the btu is what i am looking for if it hooks when i finds the dry

For me, the BTU definitely hooks when it finds friction. If that's not what you want, maybe the black Hammer would be a better option. I think that it hooks more than old-school urethane did, but it's still more the true urethane look, more roll than snap.

If you're playing 12 to 5 with a Mix, even given spotty carry, I would say a BTU would probably be too much ball. Give the Purple Pearl Urethane from Hammer or Pitch Blue from Storm a look.

Think of the BTU as a reactive resin ball, tweaked, so that the response time to friction is much slower.  That is why the cover refreshes faster, and also why it has a bit more kick off the dry than the traditional urethane ball.
