C-System 2.5
« on: April 05, 2010, 12:24:59 AM »
I am looking for a ball that is very versatile and handles carry down well. One that I can use as my benchmark ball. Any comments appreciated.

Thanks

Unless you have a higher ball speed or a higher ball speed to rev rate ratio, I wouldn't recommend the 2.5 as a benchmark. If you watched Brad Angelo on TV Sunday, you saw the VERY strong backend this ball has. That backend can be very hard to control unless you are PBA-consistent or use more ball speed to reduce the backend.

The Evil Seige would probably make a better benchmark, in general.

I had to put almost a Rico type of drilling on my 2.5 to have any sense of control, but when the lanes get dry, it tells me immediately, shouts at me really, to put it away: severe increased backend.

I agree with Charlest. The 2.5 is a little to flippy to be a benchmark ball. You want a benchmark ball to be a little smoother and controllable. This way you can tell if you need more or less length, more or less backend motion. I would also recommend the Evil Siege. There is alos the possibility of the Diamondback. I would go with the Evil though... The evil is really good.

I'm drilling up a 2.5 this week with a 2.5" pin to pap coincidently. I just realized that actually haha. Approximately, 45x2.5x65 layout. Hoping to control the flare but still have a decent backend. Ball will be polished. I will comment when I throw it Thursday night if you want.

Yo (sticking his hand up shyly ...)

Stock surface is, as far as I know, of the 500/4000 grit type. That was a little too early for me, as far as clearing the heads. I took mine to P1000/P2000/P3000 grit. I like this surface better. (Tried 4000 but that made it too skid/flip).

I've used my 2.5 smoothsanded at 2,000 abralon and 2,000 abralon plus polish and loved the reaction i got both ways. This is a skid/flip ball so beware of that.

I am sorry but I have to disagree with the 2.5 being skid flip.  Mine is drilled with "Parker Bohn''s favorite layout" maximum hook and ARC.  Does it move when it hits the dry? Yep.  Is it a flip? Nope.  Does just what it is supposed in box finish.  I have skid/flip balls in my bag..this ain''t one of them.  Perhaps I see more oil than the people who say it is a skid/flip ball, I don''t know.  I do know that I can''t play up the boards with it but that is not my "A" game anyways.

As always, depends on ball speed, oil faced, and drilling .....

How can you disagree on it being a skid flip ball, you just said you have it set up to arc, obviously it is not going to snap with that drilling.

Ok, calm down, you two.
You both have a point. Let's not get personal. It's a matter of release and drilling making us see different things from the same ball.

An arc drilling can make the ball more arc-like and less skid/flip but both the ball's basic design and the bowler's release can affect the breakpoint shape even more.

Using a ball on more oil or with more ball speed will reduce the backend and make it appear or have less of a skid/flip nature.

We have enough confrontations here. We need to see more of one another's viewpoint and accept it as such, even if we don't phrase the words properly.

Had trouble with mine to start...too straight on oil...too sharp on dry.
Now wetsand 800 grit, with a light coat of Brunswick High Gloss...
Much more controlable now but still very condition specific.

My story is a little different,I took it down to 1000A,2000,4000 and used it that way for awhile and it worked well each set for 1.5 games swinging the ball then had to put it away. Yrsterday, kinda by accident I was getting my stuff ready for league nite. I usually polish most of my stuff except the 2.5 but slipped my mind and I polished it too. It rolled well inside out and I could start a little closer to the gutter. Then someone asked if I could throw it down the boards and with just a little increase in ball speed the ball workrd great and for quite awhile. I was surprised as hell and as that area dried a little I could make small moves left to make small arcs and it still behaved and carried well. I learned a lot. I told team mates that I wish they would put out some real oil because i have an undrilled 3.5 that I would love to try!!!!

notsohotshot, What is your drilling on the 2.5 and your approximate rev rate?

Thanks

Threw my 2.5 for the first time last night in league. Shot is around 40', medium-ish volume. I started out with my LevRG with a strong layout with a good look, so there's a decent amount of oil for me to even consider using that ball. Throwing about 20-13 or so. After about one game, LevRG was starting to burn the track and check up early. Normally I'd rather move in than switch balls, but wanted to get the 2.5 some time on the lane.

Keep in mind that my 2.5 was drilled with a 50x2x55 degree layout. Pin ended a little closer to my axis than I had wanted, but oh well. Bumped a little right trying 15-10 because the ball was highly polished vs. the light polish of the LevRG. Ball was super clean down the lane. I wouldn't expect anything else due to the weak pin position and polished cover. Very smooth midlane, and fairly tame backend. Nothing snappy about this layout. Didn't miss the pocket once the second game although a few tens ruined an otherwise solid game. I didn't move the rest of the night. Tens were the only thing I left. There was a plastic ball or two being thrown down the track, so that could have been a factor. Other than that, I would say the ball would match up greater on anything less than 40' for me personally. The ball rolled very smooth and was extremely controllable. With the right layout, I would certainly expect this ball to be a great benchmark. With the wrong layout, this ball could easily be a skid-flip type reaction.

My stats: about 350 rpms, more forward roll, moderate tilt, low track about 3.75" over, 1.25" up, 16-17 mph. Hope it helped. This was my experience in the two games last night on the THS. Will be bowling this afternoon on a real shot. I'll comment later on.
