Chemical To Take Polish Off?
« on: September 30, 2005, 01:42:56 AM »
i bought an absolute inferno on ebay used and there is polish on the coverstock.
i tried using it on out long med/oily pattern and it skids further than i'd like.
is there something i can use to take off the polish.

any tips for getting polish out of the serial number?

absolutely not!!  I do that after every session for my "scuffed" pieces.  Just pick what smoothness you want and get the right pad for it.

green, grey and maybe burgandy go to home depot or pep boys in the paint prep section.

im going to get gray/green/burgandy pads.

i looked on buddiesproshop.com and green is 600 grit, i think thats about right.

how am i actually doing this whole process?
i have a plastic ball holder and a work bench.
spray bottle, remove all cleaner, clean n' dull and brunswick factory polish.
am i working from the top in a circular motion around the ball?

    thanks!

just get the entire ball..I usually start on the left side of the holes.....flip the ball over and do the other side.....

am i supposed to push hard? soft?
so, the pattern of how you change the surface doesnt matter?
    circular pattern or not?
just cover the entire ball evenly?

thank you, i appreciate the information jeff.

give it some pressure........the finer the grit you go...you'll feel like you'll need to use more pressure......

    I go in small circles.......

Don't worry....you are not going to do anything "bad" to the ball......

how does 3M Rubbing Compound compare to brunswick's rough buff finish?
im thinking about using the red scotch brite with 3M finish.
how would that compare to what it's at now? (polished OOB condition)

    Thanks!

    Ric,

does the acetone need to be diluted 50/50?

    Thanks!

Before anyone trying to say that it will ruin the cover, IF YOU SOAK THE BOWLING BALL IN IT, IT WILL RUIN THE COVER. I am not saying soak the ball, I am saying wipe the cover off with acetone on a rag, it will dissipate before it can do ant type of damage to it.
I also know that Acetone is outlawed by the USBC/ABC, which is an outdated rule.

Well, if Ric admits it. so will I. Before I start, I gove the ball a good wipe with acetone. After I done, I repeat the same process.

It really gets all the gunk built up out of the ball.

Keep looking... I'm sure there's a 300 in one of those balls you keep buying!!

I've used acetone since the 70s, but only on balls I use in
non-sanctioned competition...otherwise they would be illegal.
