« on: September 09, 2008, 11:01:42 AM »
i bowl on friday night league which to me is pretty dry, so im planning to plug and redrill an old gold rhino that i found on the rack on good condition... nothing that a resurface cant take out.

what kind of surface should i leave it on?

When a house bowler misses the mark, misses the break point and strike, for many ppl its called a wallshot. When a pro does that its call adjustment

When a house bowler gets his finger stuck in the ball and fall on the lanes, for many ppl its called lame bowler. When a pro does that its called the Machuga flop! ha i like this one.

The ball was made for medium oil in 1994!  It should be right at home on light oil, maybe even dry.  Anything resin will flip when it hits dry, but it should be a pretty good choice.  Light bulb weight block and only 0.032 differential should keep it from over reacting.

I have one drilled with the pin above and about 1" to the right of my ring finger. I use it at 1000 to 2000 abralon with light polish on a fresh shot with medium to heavy in the center of the lane and medium to light on the outside. A modified THS that is definitely not dry outside.

The ball is about as smooth and predictable as anything I have thrown. It does not overreact when it hits the dry, but it is by no means a light or dry lane ball with this drilling.

If you take the cover up to 4000, it does not handle carry down well and for me, becomes erratic from shot to shot, when the lanes have broken down if I try to play the track.

If the heads are dry, forget it, you will leave some crazy splits and the ball finishes weak. Definitely needs oil to help it down the lane.

My 4 cents worth, based on actual experience.

oh crap, i already gave it to the guy to drill it strong for me since i thought it would not move at all

i was hoping that the ball would give me a nice skid and get out of the dry very smoothly, maybe i can do some surface adjustment... well we will see how this goes

It will move. Try it on the fresh shot. You will be surprised. Really a good ball.

a little update

i went and tried the ball, the reaction is not that bad but i had the feel that it has very high RG cuz it wasnt revvin up when it hits the dry.

i misjudged the lanes since i didnt match the lane with the ball so i left tons of 10s and 7s.

hopefully tmr i would do a better job

btw, few ppl were amazed that a ball thats so old would look ok on the lanes lol

It's not how it looks, it is how it carries!!!! And from what you posted, it did not carry well.  You may not have the Hand the CP has.  A newer ball that goes long with a stronger coverstock and core may help you with that.

Usually bowlers with hand get along better with older weaker covers, on the dry.

I'd go with pin up right of ring finger, CG in the center of palm, polished up at maybe 4000 abralon. If the heads are super burnt too, go for the long polish, otherwise, I'd reccomend 4000 abralon with a buff, maybe a light, light polish.

As far as bowlingnut07 goes, he's got the ball intelligence of a 4 year old. The Gold Rhino is GREAT for dry lanes. There are better balls, but you asked if it would work, and yes, it will work very well.

Someone else to consider contacting for layout and surface advice is the authority on the Gold Rhino, Nick Smith. You can reach him at his webpage: www.brunsnick.com That's brunsNICK, not BrunsWICK. He's a regional staffer for Brunswick.

Tell him a JAT bowler sent you.
