Direct Correlation or No?
« on: February 01, 2009, 04:53:43 AM »
Any correlation between how a ball sells and if it's successful on the PBA tour?

The only reason I ask is because I'm watching Carol Dorin-Ballard, Sean Rash and Brad Angelo completely whiff with the WILD RIDE.

BTW, I love mine.

The tour has some, but little influence on what sells in the pros shop.

For instance, How many Black Widows (Original, Pearl, Bite or Venom) have made TV shows? Not very many. But Black Widows have been the hottest selling ball for the past 2 1/2 - 3 years.

Conversely, Storm Hy-Road has made numerous shows and overall is selling well.

So while the Tour isn't the ball selling showcase it once was, it still has some influence.

It has been argued many time on here before but yes from first hand knowledge,THE TOUR DOES SELL BALLS![/quote]

I agree that the Tour does sell balls, to a certain degree, but right now its only selling Storm balls due to lack of oil in the front part of the lane.

in my experience the tour sold many more balls 10-15 years ago than it does now. the fact you see storm on every telecast and yet the busiest pro shop in kc hardly sells any should tell you something.......

Regarding this topic:
I have told this story here before but in light of the current discussion, it's worth repeating.

Back when the Quantum Helix was being marketed (for $300, no discount), my pro shop/driller guy had 3 of them. He owned the pro shop in the center where the Johnny Petrgalia Open was being held in NJ, Carolier Lanes, now Brunswick ZOne carolier. Walter Ray won the even using the Helix on the TV show. My driller figured he'd finally sell 1 or more of the 3 Helix balls Quantum (Brunswick Technology Ventures) made him buy and forbade him from selling for anything less than the list price.

Needless to say, he sold not one of those ball. They hung around for another 3 - 4 years. He finally ditched them for about $15 each.

I'd say there was virtually no relationship between balls used on the show and what sells.

Absolutely if great bowlers such as CDB, Rash, or Angelo can't make it ball work  how much a chance does an average bowler have at making it work? No thanks I'll pass.

But remember rarely do you ever face the conditions that they do on TV.
The thing is on TV the conditions often vary HUGELY from what they faced furing the week. If they used the WR to get to the show, how bad a ball can it be? Just because they and it failed on TV, do you know if it was what they doing, or was it the WR itself?

Because others had good reactions, why assume it was the ball's fault? 99% of the time, or hiogher, it's operator error, not a bad ball.

Why Big B do you put the twisted core inside the activator shell when you could make a winner out of wrapping activator around a symmetric zone core?

There is a Brunswick bowling ball with activator cover and a symmetric core called the Rattler.  The Rattler has the low RG symmetrical rocket core.  Link : http://www.brunswickbowling.com/bvp_rattler

The average bowler isn't on a PBA pattern.

The average bowler isn't on a PBA pattern that hasn't been broken down by 6 to 8 other bowlers on league night.
