Has anybody noticed this...
« on: October 16, 2006, 05:17:05 PM »
the really skinny oil lines you get around the Strike Zone?  Are the lines supposed to be that skinny?  I understand revs and all, flare, track and the whole nine, but I have never seen a dull ball leave oil lines so skinny.  I have highly polished balls that don't leave oil lines around the ball that thin!!  It's 800-grit OOB for crying out loud.

I have an idea of what makes the Activator cover so nice... it's like it stores energy or something! Is it because of what I noticed (the skinny oil lines)???  The ball seems to get thru the heads with ease, I have never seen either of my Strike Zones burn up on any condition [of course i know not to use it on bone dry lanes].

But get this, my second SZ is 400-grit!  The lines seem to have gotten thinner on it compared to my OOB cover SZ.  I shot 631 yesterday with it right after sanding it (from 220 first) just playing around, saying to myself I wanna see it burn up... it never did. I even played the SAME line the whole night, lanes were NOT that oily either.

Is it me or is this ball just awesome?!?

I never noticed how thin the lines were on my two SZ's, but yeah, Activator is serious stuff.  Any ball with that cover has such a dynamic look on the backend if you match up with it, it's unlike anything I've thrown before.  I've had stuff look good on the backend, but balls with Activator are quite a bit different.  Lot more confidence.

While I'm not a Brunswick lover and prefer Ebonite, I have not seen many Zones with Activator Coverstocks thrown.  I have noticed the same thing with my The ONE.  The oil lines on that ball are almost non-existant compared to the other balls I throw.  The GB coverstock is supposed to absorb the oil quicker than  other coverstocks.  Is it possible that the Activator Coverstock absorbs the oil quicker causing the rings to thin out?  I'm really interested in your opinion because it may cause me to re-think about how I feel about the Brunswick covers.  I have always felt that they started rolling too early for my style, but it's been quite a while since I've thrown Brunwick.

From what I see, the lines seem to be very thin, yet not completely soaked in... so there's evidence that all the oil hasn't soaked in completely, and I don't see remnants of soaked-in oil around the thin lines either.
Also, Activator seems to have a long life as far as everyone'e reviews to date about the cover, so this to me sounds like it just has a smaller footprint than most other balls- its something about that cover that makes it hold the energy, I don't get it, it is so dynamic.

However, my mom got a SZ around January and after I attempted to resurface it for her this week, it seems as though hers is completely saturated! So bad that after sanding to 220 and cleaning thoroughly water still just rolls off, like I never put water on it.

A side note about this ball, my first SZ has a big hole in it (my driller says it's absolutely necessary, for legal reasons) about 1.25 inch wide and about 4 to 5 inches deep - and I just love hearing it roll over that hole by the time it hits the pins.  It sounds like it's rolling over the thumb hole...... man that thing flares like crazy!! Never loses energy.

If the ball is hitting the weight hole, that was an bad drill, it should never hit any hole if drilled correctly

Actually it was ignorance on my part...
The ball came with the CG off-line with the pin and MB about 2 inches, if not more.  I still got it drilled, but now that I know better I should have returned it for another one.

My drillr decided on a drill pattern, which I have no idea how he decided but the ball is still a beast.  The weight hole is HUGE, and the ball flares a ton, which means by the time it hits the pocket it is hitting the hole.  He tells me the ball is still borderline-legal, depending on the scale used it can go either way!!

Well, I'm trying to use this to my advantage, by listening and knowing if the ball hit its breakpoint properly.  Chances are if I don't hear the hole, I may see a lot of stone 8's!  That ball is very good at leaving that pin, so the warning is working thus far...
