Speed Demon Q
« on: August 13, 2008, 06:34:50 AM »
I can buy a Speed Demon Zone from a friend of mine. Will this ball work on drier lanes?

Sounds like it was advertised as a ball that was clean through the heads at least...

Listed as a light oil ball on BBR.

Funny thing is, this same coverstock was used on the Quantum Leap and at 320 grit OOB that ball was thought to be an "oiler" by many.

All I know about the Speed Demon is it hooked the planet in Brunswick Circuit Pro Bowling, haha. Assuming the game was remotely accurate, you ain't gonna be using it on dry lanes. How's that for an analysis?

Given its lower RG and having seen a few back when, it will handle medium oil and when they transition, you can just follow the oil line, because the ball got length and LOTS of backend, if you had true average hand.

I just wouldn't call it a light oil ball, unless you have far greater ball speed than rev rate or you have a low rev rate.

It comes "Brunswick" polished (probably 400 grit + polish) so if you need more length and less backend, you could sand it finer, say 1000 or 1200 or 1500 grit (NOT Abralon, try 2000 grit Abralon) and then repolish.

A fellow in my club still uses one. He is a low tracker and puts some good revs on the ball which is drilled strong. I suppose this thing has never been de-oiled or even resurfaced since it was punched up, but it still hooks well and is IMHO on today's lanes a good medium to medium-dry condition ball with a shiny surface. Not a true dry lane ball at all, though, it has IMHO due to its core more punch than, say, a Power Groove. I suppose it is even stronger than a current Avalanche Solid, probably a slighty smoother Swarm.

My firend, a cranker with lower ball speed, used the ball on a lane that hadnt been oiled in 2-3days. The reaction was actually kind of impressive. It made it through the heads and then made a smooth turn, and still he got about 6-7" flare on it.

Haha, I remember that.  That ball could wheel on any oil pattern and was damn near uncontrollable in that game.
