Fury Pearl: Updated
« on: September 26, 2007, 02:42:12 PM »
Just picked one up this weekend and am going to get it drilled next Thursday or Friday and wanted to see how you guys laid yours out. So lets see some pics of the layouts and hear how you like the reaction your getting. I have a few ideas on what I'm going to do but some more input never hurts.

Update:
Got the ball drilled 5" pin to PAP with the pin about an inch above the bridge with no weight hole. The ball gets really easy length and then is very strong off the break point, not jumpy, just a very smooth but hard arc. The bad news is during practice last night it got chewed all to hell so I'm waiting to see if I can get it approved to have it replaced or see if I have to try and have it fixed first. So I've only got to roll it 3 games but I liked what I saw in those 3 games. Once everything gets figured out I'll give a better review.

I also have a Pearl Fury ready to drill, and I'd like to know how others have laid it out as well.

There *has* to be more than one person who frequents this site who has drilled and thrown a Pearl Fury...

I drilled one with the pin under at about 4.5 from PAP. Just haven't had a chance to throw it yet as I ran out of compound for custom thumb moldings. I should have some in by next Tuesday and will gladly offer anything I pick up that could help out.

My initial thought is pearlizing this coverstock is a good move. The solid was way too surface sensitive and really overpowered the motion. Just from giving more thought to the whole surface/motion thing, this could be a great sleeper ball.

I got mine 5 3/4 X 5 pin above the fingers.  Doesn't have a huge backend but a hard smooth arc.  Rolls just like my brother's storm agent.

Okay, I will try to remember to look at mine tomorrow when I go to the shop. I will post the layout when/if I remember.  The ball is pretty impressive off the dry without being jumpy.

I got out and practiced some this morning with this ball and had my full arsenal out for control or reference balls. This ball pushed the front better than my Sidewinder, but was smoother off the back end. I was taking my hand out of it and playing out on the lanes. The layout has a lot to do with this as it is meant to be slower response on the friction. It will have a place in my bag for playing out and also when the fronts are disappearing and I need something to be smooth off the point.

Mine is 4 x 4 pin above fingers.  BIG backends.

It reminds me of the old Cuda/C pearl going down the lane.  The color and reaction shape are very very similar.

If I thought for one second I could get another reaction like that, I would be all over this thing like white on rice.  I will have to see get my hands on one to try out.  The cuda c was flat out AMAZING

Uh, I think you might have left out the "talent" part there.

Ric,

What kind of reaction is this layout giving Ryan. Those are some great numbers. I think I'm leaning towards a layout that will give me a long and strong but not jerky off the dry type of reaction. Thanks for all the input.

Now that I have time to bowl, I thought I'd upgrade. I still love my AI, and try keep it as close to the factory finish as possible. I wanted something just a wee bit sronger since oil volumes have steadily increased over the last couple of years. So - punched out a Fury & a Fury pearl. Fury was the same layout as my AI, and the Pearl I just moved the pin about 1/2" closer to my PAP. All layouts are with the pin above the ring, and the CG at 3/4+ with no hole. I hate "burn-out" , so the Fury I hit with a 2000 abralon pad. The Fury Pearl I left "factory". Threw them on a fresh house shot - medium/heavy on Pro-Anvilane. I got what I expected with both the Fury and the AI, but the Fury pearl was surprisingly skating in the oil. It pushed farther and recovered less than my AI. The 4000 finish really dominates the reaction. I took it down slightly with a grey scotchbrite pad and dramatically improved the reaction. Granted - even with this finish it is not a heavy oiler, but it really improved the ball. It's too early to tell, but it may end up replacing my AI, or I may take the AI to a shinier surface and use it to step down from the Fury pearl.
It is a nice looking ball, predictably reacts to cover tweaks, and hits as good as the AI. What's not to like?

I bought one yesterday I have about 10 games on it ball tracks up fast and mine got chewed up 4th game looks like crap at least its not in my track though. My ball seems to be very very over under. Hits well I took it down to 1k abralon and it was a little more controllable I might hit it with some 500 and put a polish on it to see what that does.

Mine being chewed up was not at all any quality issue with the ball. My spare ball as well as a couple other guys on my pair had there stuff chewed up alittle. Luckily my spare ball wasn't bad and neither were the other balls. There was something that the balls were getting caught on occassionally that was the issue so I hope they got it fixed before it happens to anyone elses stuff.

Mine was not a quality issue either. I was just saying it did track up fast and I also had my spare ball get messed up pretty badly alot worse then the fury. After I saw that I switched lanes.
