Refreshing 3.5 surface, how often?
« on: March 26, 2010, 12:32:14 AM »
I heard that the 3.5 (perhaps other Big-B equipmet) need constant surface refresment to get a consistant reaction.

I'm beginning to believe that since my 3.5 doesn't react the same way as it did out of the box.  I only have 6 games on it and it wasn't making the turn last night like it did in those first six games.  I had to change to my Cell to save my series.

If a surface refreshment should be done often, do you just hit it lightly with 500 abralon/siaair and then lightly again with 4000?  Yes I have a spinner.

I read somewhere from a ball company, that almost all high performance balls lose their "true" grit after as low as 9 games. The study said that a ball with 4000 grit surface could become up to as much as 10,000 grit on the balls track area. So I would assume that coming up with a "refresher" surface touch up every 9 games or so would be a good thing to do.

I agree with TMACK. All balls need refreshed from time to time. And yes you would do 500 first then 4000.

I understand that surface refresment needs to be done, I was just unaware that it needs to be done so often.

I'm guessing for refresment that you don't want to take off much material so just about 5-10 seconds per side using light pressure with 500 and 4000?

Correct, you do not have to do it that long.

IIRC, the people at Innovative recommend doing a refresh after every set or day of bowling.  Pretty sure this was in the book or DVDs that came with my spinner.

Interresting.  I'm guessing Innovative says this as it's truely the only way you can maintain the exact reaction every set.

Thanks for the info everyone, I'll bet getting a lot more use out of my spinner and that investment will really begin pay off.

There''s no way I''m tinkering with the 3.5 surface after every single set on this ball.

It''s your ball, and you can do what you want with it... but 3 games shouldn''t change the surface much unless you''re bowling on zero oil, in which case a different ball would be a logical choice.

Yeah, I'm not planning on refreshing after every set, but 9 games sounds reasonable.

i do mine every 8 games or so, but thats just lightly hitting it with the appropriate grit abralon pad to bring it back to box surface.... and I mean extremely light pressure..
