Having trouble with Absolute
« on: April 25, 2005, 10:37:32 PM »
I just got my AI(15#, 3"pin, 3oz tw) and drilled like this:
O   O *
 cg
O      Pin next to ring finger and cg at mid palm.

my problem is the ball doesn't hook for me and no backend.. you know that's weird since AI is known to be HOOK and FLIP. I am a low rev and low speed player 12-14mph. maybe i'm too weak to hold 15#? I throw it 2nd arrow, it just stays that line and backend a little which hits the 4th pin. or hook to the right with almost no backend turn hit the 6th pin.

is this my release problem? or this AI not good on oily lane?(my bowling place have oily lanes) Am I throwing it too slow or low rev?

any advance will help. thanks

Is the AI your only ball, or do you have other reactive balls which show either similar or completely different reactions?

The AI should cope well with oily conditions. 12-14 mph and coming high into the pocket is not asign of low speed. In fact, I am wondering how you manage to play this ball THAT straight!
It seems as if tha ball cannot do what it is supposed to by design. From what you write I'd guess you have a weak release (coming around the ball instaed of giving it lift) which makes the ball rather spin than roll. This results in weak hook and pin action. Try to stay behind the ball upon the release. Probably the ball reaction will change?

Hope this helps a bit?

AI is my only ball for now.. but i used to bowl my friend's BVP punisher, and it hooks more. i think i have weak release too, but i not strong enough to swing the ball up high at back and release with lift. any suggestion to improve release with limited strengh?

when you release the ball make sure:

thumb comes out first then *handshake* with the pins.

don't try to over-turn the ball.  just gently let the ball come off your hand as you *handshake* with the pins.  this will allow your thumb to come off cleanly and get decent sideroll on the ball.  also, don't try to bring up your backswing as this will add speed and (higher speed + less rev = more skid).

by the way, the drill you have on the ball is more of a control drill.  but i still don't see why the ball wouldn't flip pretty good on the back end.

Ok, the AI is not made for heavy oil but if your Punisher reacts stronger  something must be wrong.

In the moment you release your ball imagine you "crack a whip", this should give the ball some extra "bite". The correct timing is important.

Also you can try to cupp your wrist, but for "normal" revolutions this is not necessary.

To me it looks and sounds like the AI is too much ball for ball speed, rev rate and condition you are on. Especially if you percieve that the BVP Punisher hooks more.

The AI may be rolling or hooking out. This will give the appearance that the ball is going straight.

If this is the case, you may want to take the ball to the pro shop and let them polish it with Brunswick Factory Finish. This will allow the ball to store energy longer.

Wait... First, the layout you've described doesn't do anything for me with my release style. Period, any ball, any time. It goes dead straight. You said your friend's Punisher hooks more, but you did not say it was drilled the same. I just redrilled my AI and it went from terrible to great, and the change really wasn't that much. I hated to redrill it, but it REALLY did the trick. Was your friend's Punisher the same drilling as your ball?
Second, forget this "I need more strength and a higher backswing". Bull. Not with today's balls.
Also, what weight is your absolute? Are you left or right? Don't give up yet.

The ball is burning up....I have both and the Puniser is reacting later.  Which appears to make it look as if it is hooking more.  Save the AI for oil.

The AI in box condition or polished must be rolled agressively to be consistenly effective.  Especially if the drilling is somewhat agressive too.
Ball with agressive core + agressive coverstock + agressive drilling = Ball must be rolled agressively.

thanks for the replies..

here's more info to clear some question.

i'm 140lb weight
my AI 15lb 3top 3pin
right hand
the pro shop guy DID select this layout for me he said cuz im beginner, so start with generic layout ( now i think it's BS )
my friend's Punisher layout is pretty similar but his ball is 14lb, so i can roll better and hook better.

when you guys said burn up or burn out what does it mean? i'm already playing on oily lanes.
Am I screwed with this layout and not enough strength to roll it faster?

thanks guys
