Suggestions for my sisters new ball
« on: August 19, 2007, 01:24:53 PM »
My sister is currently a junior in high school and carrys a 140 average.  Her ball speed is relatively slow and she barely generates any revolutions.  She does throw somewhat of a hook but she needs to get the mechanics of her game down even more.  She currently throws a 12 pound Track Heat which I think she has outgrown.  The ball does not offer her enough backend for her technique to be effective.  She bowls on the high school league and the alleys usually vary between medium to heavy oil on THS.

What two balls would you guys suggest for her, and does 13 pounds make a big difference?

I would suggest her getting a 13 lb. RAMPAGE. If her speed is pretty slow, then the cover should handle any amount of oil, yet give her more late movement as compared to a stronger cover that will "burn up" and be dead at the pins. A second choice would be a WIZARD, but she may need to polish it if her speed is slower to help with pin carry.

In 12 and 13 pounds you will find that Brunswick is the better core than other manufacturers and for a lot less money than the "premier lines" of other companies.

Storm has dynamic cores in their Master and Premier ball lines in 12 & 13 lbs.

Just curious where you get that information. A quick look at the Storm website's premier line would challenge that.  They only list the RG & differential specs. on 14-16 pound balls...

If you have some reliable information that would support your claim, I would be interested to know where to find it for my own knowledge.  Thanks.

Bowling.com sells Storm equipment in both 14-16 and "lightweight".  "Lightweight" means that it has a dynamic core, but is built to be lighter in weight.  If I recall correctly, Bowling.com does list the nature of those cores.

So far it looks like the BVP rampage is a good idea for her.  Is there any other balls that might be good? Perhaps an absolute inferno or is that too much ball for her?

The lower RG core of the Absolute will rev up faster, but I'm not sure that's what you want if she rolls it slower.  The Absolute has been a great ball, but I'm just thinking that the Rampage may be a better fit.

Notclay..

I received that information via email from Storm in reply to my inquiry on that subject.

Thanks. It's good to see that they're doing that.

I would recommend the Raw Hammer Doom and the Black Widow for your sister.  Both are good overall performing balls that can combat a multitude of conditions.  They come in the weight that your sister can bowl with.

something with a medium rg core and pearl coverstock?  Probably not one of the strongest coverstocks either, so something from one of the mid-lines.  Looking at maybe Rampage, Bash, Doom, or maybe a t-road pearl or jolt pearl?  To her, color would probably be as important as small differences in reaction.

Thats quite offensive.  I asked for you suggestions for a ball not your opinion on what color my sister wants.  She can tell the difference.  So far BVP Rampage still.

If you want to stick with Brunswick, I would suggest the Blast Zone for your sister.  It uses a modified phantom core and hybrid version of the Activator coverstock.  This ball can handle medium to heavy oil conditions.

Sometimes the truth hurts.  If that was offensive to you, you had better grow a thicker skin...

I stand by my opinion.  There is a reason your sister averages 140 on what I can only assume to be an easy house shot.  With "barely any revs" and on medium-medium oily conditions, as you stated, she's not going to see a whole lot of reaction out of anything, let alone small differences between similar balls.  And whether you want to believe it or not, color IS important to girls in high school.

Maybe you should do you sister a favor and take her to a proshop that knows her game or one what will take the time to watch her throw a few shots and get a recommendation.  It will likely be just as good or better than anything we can suggest here.

I have seen the Blast Zone in action the last few weeks for one of the women in my club who was a 182 avg. but on heavy medium patterns she was more like a 145 (med/high ball speed w/minimal rotation). She purchased the Blast Zone 2 weeks ago and is averaging about 215 for 9 games in three different houses on heavy medium to heavy patterns.

Another women in my club with really slow ball speed had very similar success with the Vapor Zone.

Thicker skin does not have anything to do with blatant lack of manners and sophistication and oddly enough my sister does not care about the color of her ball rather that it could help increase her skill as a bowler. I appreciate the advice you gave me about the pro shop though as I once asked on this forum for recommendations and it proved to be very helpful so I thought I would try it again.
