I suppose it comes from two things:
- entry angle (a good hit will always result in a short and sharp pin noise, almost like an "implosion")
- coverstock prep and porousity
Remember: sound is another form of energy, or the ball's impact energy transmitted through the air.
I found that polished pearl balls have a much higher, "cracking" sound with a good pocket hit, while dull and especially particle stuff (I noticed this especially with Storm particles) makes a more muffled, thumping noise.
By the way, I can confirm Katel's experience with the Trauma. Loud ball!
