help with dry lanes
« on: September 23, 2005, 11:06:11 PM »
so i bowl at JIB lanes for my highschool team. Not sure if it will be like this when the season starts but for now you never know weather to expect lanes with oil, or lanes that havent been oiled since the morning before (extreme toast). Usually i get the extreme toast. Now i use my plastic ball for this. If i throw it normally with my usual rev's, it hooks at like 20 feet and is at the 4 or 7 pin by the time its at the pins, and BTW, i started at the right hand gutter and anywhere else on the lane, it always hooks a ton. I can also throw the ball with no revs at all and only forward roll but then the ball is tracking over my thimb and it thuds and i cant get any type of move to the pockt and i get bad carry.

Well, my question is, If my plastic ball (big blue spare) is over hooking on toast, with the Power Groove Dry/R also over hook since its a mild reactive which is more aggressive than a plastic ball?

Yes, the Dry/R would be too much.  Have you tried throwing the ball end over end directly at the pocket?  Sometimes this is the only way to score.  What is the scoring pace on this?  Other people must be having trouble, and if they're not, look where their playing.

O ive tried that. No one is scoring good, except for the ocasional house ball users who just drop the ball and let it roll. Im really lost for this and when it comes to school, i need to bowl well for colleges. I meed to move my average up from last year( was a 184) and im lookin to get it up yo 200+ but if i have to throw plastic all season im screwed

Why are you screwed?  People averaged over 200 with plastic long better resin was even a thought.

Unfortunately, you're just going to have to learn a new release or something.  Different balls won't help.  Versatility is the name of the game.

And why will you be screwed if you have to throw plastic?  Plastic will hit as hard as resin if used on proper conditions (such as the toast you're bowling on).

o i know this, its just that when i throw my plastic i cant get a read off the ball, and i dont know how to make adjustments off of it because theres like to recovery because i will see oil from 5 to 0 but its like an out of bounds...no recovery at all, so if i miss a bit im screwed, and if i tug i go through the nose.

Urethane... get an urethane ball! I post this very often, and if you need something between plastic and reactive with control and smooth hook on dry lanes, this is the ticket.

Have you tried to move LEFT??  There must be some oil in the middle of the lane.   You should be moving in the direction of the ball finish.   If it finishes at the 4 or 7 pin you should be moving LEFT, NOT RIGHT.  You move far enough and you will find oil.   Stand against the ball return, look at 20, and don't let the ball get outside 10.   Try that.

Might also try the new PURE Hammer.   It is a reactive blend urethane.   It really clears the fronts and doesn't overreact in dry.

I agree with him, but I just want to emphasize the idea of standing deep and actually getting the ball out to the right. Too many people play deep by standing on 40 and throwing the ball out to 15 and say it's too dry. If the lanes dictate it, get the ball back out to 5! Give the ball room to hook.
Also, change your hand positions if you need to. Just suitcase the ball (put your hand sideways --> thumb to 9:00 and fingers to 3:00, wrist completely uncocked), and watch how much more you get on the backend of toast. This should at least let you throw a mild drilled pearl resin ball without problem. I have never, ever hit lanes so dry that doing this was not an option.

What weight ball are you throwing.. I have a very old Black Hammer that should work well..  It is what I used to use on the dry lanes, but no longer need it..  It is 16 lbs..  Yours for a very decent price!!  Single Drill!! I can send you pics if you like!!

This is a good solution, stand far left and throw with a slight angle across the middle arrow so the ball will start to break at about where the boards are where the 3rd arrow is. This way, you are playing the oil thats left in the middle of the lane.

Hey, it might be slop but, it all looks the same on the scorecard!!!!!

I'm sure the colleges do not choose people based on averages. If they do, then they are idiots. For this reason I wouldn't worry.
