Help with my Absolute
« on: January 18, 2007, 09:53:47 AM »
I have a new Absolute that I can't get to move as much as the original.  I am bowling on a fairly oily condition with an out-of-bounds to the right of the second arrow and fairly heavy oil in the middle.  With the original I am standing with my left foot on 20 and going up 10 or 11 and have a nice move to the pocket and great carry.  When I try the Absolute on the same line it has a problem  getting to the pocket.  I don't think its rolling out and, from what I understand, it should be stronger than the original.

Both balls are drilled the same using a pin to pap distance of 3 3/8" with the pin just to the right and below the ring finger.  No surface adjustments have been made to either ball.

Has anyone else had this problem?  If so, what changes did you make?  Did you change the surface and if so, to what?

Any help would be appreciated.

If no surface adjustments have been made to the original, then, depending on the age (amount of use), the worn (always to some degree) track can easily account for the difference in ball reaction. It happens very gradually over time; so often the effect is not noticeable at all until you do a comparison like this.

Aside: if you have an absolute, why get another drilled identically?

charlest, I think when he says "original", he means Original Inferno

How many games do you have on the Absolute? I know that mine really didn't come to life until I got 15-20 games on it. I have also seen this with other Activator based covers.

I found the same thing for me and sold the Absolute. Its not that it didn't work it picked up the roll much sooner than the OI and hit flatter. For me i had to close down my angles or come around the ball more to give it enough spin to push longer to move. Since that time I got two others (absolute and ultimate) from a fellow lefty in trade and played around with surface. I went up to 1000 grit on the surface and applied polish and like it much better. I did this also with an Ultimate (800grit + polish) and now see how they fit nicely as a family. Being that this group has such a low-RG coupled with my hi-track it is no wonder i needed much surface change.

I had the exact same experience with mine as No Open Tenths.  Ball would not move for first 15 games or so.  It became an awesome piece at 20-30 and now, if I get the surface tuned up and re- Rough buffed it is good as gold the first throw.  Just seems to need a break in when new. Great ball.

If after a while you still can't get the reaction you want sand it to 800 grit with no polish.  I did this while I was waiting for a Strike Zone to get drilled and could play inside on a heavy shot with Absolute.  The ball really responds to surface adjustment.

Thanks guys for the input.  I guess I wasn't clear.  The original I mentioned is the Original Inferno.  I've had the OI since August and it is my go to ball in the winter league.  The Absolute was drilled in November and I probably don't have over 15 full games on it yet.  I clean both balls after each session but have not altered the surface on either ball.

From what I am reading, I probably need to throw the ball more (maybe in practice) to get more of a track established.  If that won't work, then play with the surface.

Any more ideas would be appreciated.

Thanks again.

I did understand what you meant Original re Absolute.  Go ahead and put at least 30 games on the ball before changing the surface. That was the number my ball driller told me to put on before doing anything to the ball.  I have to tell you, it didn't move at all maybe the first 10 games or so. But when it "broke in" so to speak it was great.

I find the ball great for a fresh shot, not a heavy shot (with the Rough buff).  At a place where they put down a heavy shot, it is a last part of 2nd game and 3rd game ball.  It will work at the place with a heavier shot first game at 800 grit.
