Alright everyone... my new goliath came in last night and just happened to have a 5" pin... 3.3 oz top. I looked at it for a while and they the layout hit me... The patrick girard layout from a few weeks ago:
http://www.brunswickinsiders.com/PBATour/PBATournaments/Westbabylon/wbballimages/girardabsolute.jpgI bowl in one house with synthetic lanes, and lots of oil. I have some trouble getting a consistant break point there... nothing seems to want to start uo early enough... I tried various layouts, including a 315 degree layout (which didn't seem to have enough backend to carry), without much success. This layout sounded perfect.. early revs, heavy roll, best for playing a straighter line to the pocket (this house is notorious for carrying best playing down the boards).
I layed the goliath out with the cg about 3/4" above and 1/4" left of my thumb, pin was below at roughly 7 o'clock position. Distance from pin to negative axis point was 4.5". I checked that a line drawn from the pin to my PAP passed approx 2" below the bottom edge of where my thumb hole would be (as per recommendations). I drilled the fingers a little shallower than normal, and the thumb a little deeper than normal. Based upon the center of grip, the ball ended with 3/8oz negative side and actually 1/4oz finger weight.
I took the ball out to the lanes for a fresh shot. I immediatedly noticed a different reaction than I had seen previously. The ball actually read the early mids and got into a strong roll. I was able to throw anywhere from the 3rd arrow out and have the ball recover and hit strongly. Anything deeper than 3rd arrow yielded little to no ball reaction and poor hit. I'm not sure if this reaction was due to the aggressive surface of the goliath or the layout (although I would suspect its a combination of the two).
My bowtie ended up being located very close to the thumb, just left... so I would suggest anyone with a higher track to go beyond the 1.5" recommendation to 2" below the line from the pin to your PAP. I got about 4" of flare with this layout... most of which is up front.
Overall very nice, but different looking reaction. Definitely useful on a variety of conditions.
