High Top Weight Question <--- Calling BrunsNick!
« on: November 14, 2005, 12:03:00 PM »
as seen in a previous post...
i have recieved a high top weight ball on the quantum raven 4.7 ounces.
i spoke to my ball driiler today about it. (Kenny "Doc" Hall)
he said it was too much and would wobble down the lane and can be seen from the side...
my question is...
Nick says it doesnt wobble...
i dont know who to believe, the 20 year pro or Nick?

i dont know how the remaining top weight in the ball would cause it to wobble.
ok, here is the physical breakdown...
16 pound ball has 256 ounces in it...
with 4.7 ounce top weight with 2½ ounces removed from drilling and x-hole.

that leaves 2.2 ounces of top weight out of 253.5 ounces...
thats less than 1% of the weight, so how is that going to wobble?

anyone with experience with high top weight balls please chime in!

Hi,
From the user side of the post I can tell you it'll go a little longer than you're used to but have more backend reaction.I have a 16 lb. Lane#1 Hybrid Dirty Bomb. On medium conditions it hits hard and has given me messengers galore.
One other thing that you might like......if you begin to leave stone 9 pins or 4-9 splits, immediately move left( or right if you're left handed). That's one side effect that I really enjoy---instant feedback to tell me to MOVE!!!!!!!!!!!!

With all due respect to Ken Hall, who is one of the local announcers for the Albany-based Huck Finn bowling series on TV, and is knowledgeable in many regards...

Your ball should not wobble.  In this instance, disregard Ken's advice and go with what Nick has told you.  I have used several balls that started with high top weights that have provided no abnormal roll characteristics.

thank you Jeff,
i have much respect for Kenny Hall.
ive been going to him for advice and supporting his pro shop since 97'
along with forwarding multiple people to him for drilling service.

today i spoke with him about many things including the future of the sport.

he showed me one of the old pro-tour MEK balls with a mill hole.

stories about storing bowling balls near the AC to keep below max temp at weigh in/out.

im also joining the 30 team classic league he is in on tueday nights at olympic lanes soon.

he is a great man in all regards and a true asset to the sport of bowling.
i appreciate the information, and clarification of the issue.

I totally agree.  Ken is one of the best local examples of how to go about the sport in the right manner, and it would benefit our area greatly if more people learned from his example.

Drilling all 3 holes 1/2" deeper or so will remove more top weight; but if I were you, I'd use it first to see how it reacts. Try to go in without prejudice. If you've already decided that this is a bad thing, then no amount of observation will help. If when you've used it, you decide to remove more weight, drill all 3 holes deeper as Nick recommended. Of course, yo ucould always just drill a hole somewhere else to affect the side/finger weight or if you've placed the CG at grip center, you can just drill a hole in the middle of the grip! It won;t be the first time someone's done that. After all the main purpose of the weight hole is to make the ball USBC legal.
