How should I drill my Smokin?
« on: February 02, 2006, 10:03:35 AM »
Well I just got home from work and the present was sittin on my bed.  It's got 2.9 oz top, 1 inch pin.  Not really what I was looking for because i was planning on drilling it like my absolute, which is pin up.  Thinking of going pin under ring, cg kicked w/ a whole.  Anyone else's mostly black/smoke with only the white on the bottom half of the ball, almost columbia looking swirls, scary.

Thoughts are welcomed

Oh by the way, arsenal is in profile, haven't taken much liking to my rampage as its currently not in my travling bags right now.  So i'm looking for it to be a little weaker than my absolute which might be reaching the end of it's career.  (might get another one)

Well make sure you are not a high track player... the bowtie for flare will most likely roll over your finger holes if u drill a short pin.

set it up for medium dry spotty.. and it will be the go to ball when the oil shortens up.

I would still try to get the pin right of the ring finger, or drill the ring in the pin maybe. As for color, mine looks like a perfect mix of black and gray/silver, guess I was lucky.

Why drill the pin right of ring finger? doubt i will, if anything it will be middle bridge.

And i don't track too high, i have the perfect track. ha ha

That was just to keep it close to the 1L drilling. (my favorite for that ball). But that short of pin, really a pin under could be better.

Drill it 2E esp. with that pin placement & you won't regret it. Awesome control & arc...

2E says, and i quote "maximum hook potential for high-RPM players", this does not sound too great.  I'm leaning more towards 4E, if i don't try to trade it in for a bigger pin.

It depends too on the condition you are going to use it for & some surface adjustments including x hole tuning. It is still a nice control & arc drilling. You can't do much with pin in balls. If you notice on the drilling chart,it's like the second layout from the high towards the low flare drilling.

For my smokin i had the same specs and drilled it pin under the ring finger with cg kicked out. I got a nice ball reaction especially when the track area burnt up.

jaybird22486,

I have the same layout like yours which is 2E on the drilling chart. Awesome reaction I'm getting too from that layout.Seems very versatile type of layout for a lot of condition fresh,wet/dry/broken down,medium-light,as long as, it's not heavy oil.I did tweak the surface of my ball to 1500 grit/polish & I get to use it for fresh & second shift broken down conditions with very minimal adjustments on the line & speed.

your ball sounds freaky.  i like it.  some people are just lucky.

with a 1 inch pin, go with 1e or 1l to maximize the full potential of the ball.  this will allow you to be more versatile. even on oily lanes, you should be able to use this ball (play outside).  now if your you're going to use this in the condition it's meant for, this thing will come in hard.  a perfect compliment to your absolute.

Inferno Bowler: "Throwing a strike when the game starts is only a minor obstacle. Throwing a strike when you really need it in the 10th frame can be a whole different beast"   Parker Bohn III

Arsenal: UI / SI / OI (2) and Target Zone and soon to be added:  Scorchin or Strike Zone.

luvdasport,
1E & 1L might not match him really good 'coz he has high RPM. It says on the drilling chart, it might hook early & be inconsistent for high RPM players, use layout #2E instead. On the drilling chart, he only has at least 2 choices for that pin in ball, which is the 2E or 4E.Smokin has this category to go long already compare to other inferno like OI & UI. With the 4E drilling, it might be too long of a length(don't forget the pin is almost on the negative side already for 4E-lots of ringing ten pins with that length),not if you are bowling on lighter condition-wet/dry kinda, then it will be good.

drilled mine 2 days ago
ball specs:  3.5 inch pin ... 3.3 top weight.

I set it up with pin fingers, right between bridge, with the cg kicked out to around 4:30.   Was almost spot on legal.. so we put a small weight hole in it...

225 247 279 ... First night out with it.. on medium/dry lanes.

It is one of the greatest balls I have even thrown.. period.

For the weak handed its a great medium ball, but for crankers and high speed players its a medium dry ball from hell.
