Ultra vs Sidewinder
« on: March 04, 2008, 04:47:40 AM »
I own a Sidewinder (pin up) and am thinking about adding an Ultra but wanted to be certain they are not too similar in their reaction.  I purchased the Sidewinder to get a smoother reaction at the breakpoint.  Since they are both lower RG and appear to provide a smoother look I wanted to make sure the Ultra is not too similar to the Sidewinder.

Thanks in advance for your feedback.

The Ultra Zone is a non-particle hybrid while the Sidewinder is a low-load particle hybrid.  The Ultra Zone has also got a strong asymmetric core.  The Ultra Zone should give you a little more length and a stronger backend reaction than the Sidewinder.

I have an Ultra drilled 5 1/2" under by 30 degrees, and a Sidewinder drilled 5 1/2" under with the CG in the thumb-positive quadrant, both balls in box finish.  IME the Ultra picks up the midlane quicker and is more continuous in back than the Sidewinder, and is about two to three boards stronger overall.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the feedback.  Not really interested in more hook however a smoother reaction off the "Dry."  I have plenty of balls that react like Hockey Sticks (TNV, Raid, Total Inferno) but I am trying to find something that provides a more even arc.  I purchased the Sidewinder for this purpose however I am finding it is still fairly angular.

I have thrown both the Sidewinder (Pin Up) and Ultrazone (Pin Up).  The Ultrazone has a stronger overall hook and a quicker response time off the dry.

One of the local Brunswick staffers drilled his Ultra with a Rico drilling, this seemed to be alot smoother off the dry boards compared to his high pin Ultra.  You might want to try this if you are worried the ball may be to angular.

I would recommend getting this ball for sure, It's a nice fit between the big hooking low Rg balls and the mid range stuff.
