please help
« on: December 21, 2003, 06:15:44 AM »
ok, heres the deal. I am getting a used Monster Bruiser, which I have to get plugged and redrilled. I wanted to know a very strong drilling for this ball because all the balls I have owned, my pro shop guy will never let me drill it the way I want. He is always saying "no thats not good" and "this is how you sould do it", well for once I want to get MY BALL drilled the way I WANT. Even if it is wrong, I want it done my way for once. I know your all going to say "well he knows what he's doing" and I cant disagree, but, all my balls are weak and dont hook very much. I want my bruiser to have MAD back end. Like break-your-neck backend. But I also want it to be able to roll far enough. Let me know please.

they don't all know what they are doing, trust me.

That being said, has the pro shop guy seen you bowl and what your style is? If not, then he may not have room to talk.

Either way, what kind of drilling does your current equipment have? I am not sure of what drilling will give you what you are looking for, but wanted to throw the above comment in.

I am not real good at this either, I have been bowling almost 20 years, and am just now starting to learn about drillings. For me it was one of those things, they told me to bowl, so I did.

exactly! basically I started and had no idea what I was doing, but it looked fun, and my friend did it. Soooo I got my first ball, drilled up conventional and all, then got that plugged and redrilled fingertip. Eventually  got a free ball with a league I did and bowled with those for a while, mind you these are non-reactive balls, actually a urethane and a plastic, and when I got my particle, my pro shop guy said "Let me see your hand", took my measurements, and drilled it. Soo like I said, I want to get this one done how I want.

First of all you need to figure out what kind of a bowler you are.
Are you a stroker, tweener, or hi-rev power player?

Strokers - Norm Duke, Walter Ray Williams, Brian Voss, Eric Forkel.

Tweeners - Wiseman, Patrick Allen, Parker Bohn III, Doug Kent, Pete Weber.

Cranker (Hi-Rev Power Player) - Robert Smith, Tommy Jones, Jason Couch, Steve Hoskins, Ryan Shafer.

Once you figure out where you fit, go to the Brunswick web site and look up the drilling recommendations for the Bruiser that fit your style and will match up with the lane conditions that you think you'll be playing on.

I am really unsure of what I am. But I'll explain and maybe one of you can tell me. Basically I stand at the 2nd set of dots, so I dont walk very far, and while I walk up, I twist my hand around in towards me and at the top of my backswing, which is fairly high bout the middle of my head, I bring the ball back around so its facing the lane, then come down, not powering through it but letting the ball bring itself down, and as I come to the bottom, I give it pretty slow spin, Im a low rev player. So pretty much I can put hand on the ball, if its needed, but for most shots, since my ball doesnt hook much, I play like down and in, and let the ball do all the work. If I need to, like I said, I can put a fair amount of hand on it. Well please, some one tell me what I am! Because it will make things so much easier in the future.

Too hard without seeing you bowl. The Predator is an early rolling ball with a particle surface. It may be hooking less than you want because of the aggressive surface using up all of its energy early. If that is the case the Bruiser my be a better ball for you. BUT - if the Predator isn't hooking enough because of the heavy oil or because of your release, then the Bruiser is probably going to hook less. You probably need the advice of someone who can watch you bowl. Often that would be the Pro Shop, but it's possible that the Pro Shop owner doesn't really want to spend much time with you since you're not buying a ball from his shop. You're 15 - don't you have Junior League coaches, or other's in your age group who can give you advice? Ask around, someone might be willing to help you. If you bowled in my local center, I wouldn't mind giving you a few minutes of free advice. Another option - look around and see if there's anyone bowling who looks like they're a lot better than you or someone you know that is a good bowler. They might be able to help you out.

Okay, so what you keep asking for is max leverage, and the pro shop guy keeps telling you it's not right for you, correct?

Why don't you ask him to explain to you why the drilling you want is not right for you?  If it's based on him watching you bowl, you might learn something.

What's so terrible about that?

don't waste another dollar on equipment. you are wise enough for your age to ask for help, now are you wise enough to listen?

Seek out a coach. start with a certified coach. don't stop at one. seek out a few. they all have different teaching styles and abilities. do not be swayed by the league know it all who averages 220. he may not know as much as a 200 avg coach.

places like www.pbiinc.com are a good place to start. look for IBPSIA certification. it dose not guarantee the greatest but it's a safer bet.they take you from ball fitting to spare systems in one day. It's  amazing what you can learn from a professional. but one lesson is not enough to make you PBA material but for the cost of 2 balls you can get a lot more knowledge and can do more with what you have.

I have wasted 100's even more than a 1000.00 on equipment and (1) 120.00 lesson from Don and some additional help from his staff has done more for my game than any 10 balls would.

If you really want to get better, a lesson is they only real answer.
