Is Polishing my Ambush the right thing to do?
« on: January 14, 2008, 01:04:41 AM »
The lanes for my league this year have been sub-par.  Not many bowlers are happy with them.  They are hooking FAR more than they should be.  They are old wood.  I've heard rumors of refinishing this summer, but that doesn't help me much right now.  I'm playing way inside, and it's inconsistent for me, so I want to try to play more down and in.  But, everything is hooking too much.  So, I'm considering polishing my Ambush for more length.  I'm pretty sure it's drilled with Brunswick pattern 2L, but not positive.  Is this what I should do?  It's already pretty snappy, and I don't want it to get out of control.  And, I can't spend the money on a new ball.  Thanks.

Don't be afraid to try something like Rough Buff on it.  It will add some length, and the ball should still hook back.  Your Ambush had some High Gloss polish from the factory, but my advice is to change the cover in "stages" so you can get a more accurate read on the lanes.

If you've got access to a good spinner, hit the ball with a grey scotch brite on high speed with some water before applying the Rough Buff, just to clean it up real good.  If it still hooks too soon you can always try the High Gloss later.  Good luck.

Thanks, notclay.

I do not have access to a spinner, however, and will probably have my pro shop do whatever I decide on.  I've never really done any surface adjustments or anything on my own.  As I'm sure you've guessed, I don't have a lot of technical knowledge, but would like to learn whatever I can.  So, I'm open for any suggestions.

EDIT:
Is rough buff something I can apply at home without a spinner?

Have your shop do it on the spinner. It's similar to a polish, but has some grit to it.  If your shop doesn't have the Rough Buff, then have them try Storm #2 if they have that.  They're really close.

I'm wondering that, since the basic Ambush is SUPPOSED to be 400 grit plus B'wick High Gloss polish, maybe RDR's pro shop should sand it to 800 - 1000 grit and then have the pro shop re-apply the B'wick High Gloss polish. This way he'll know where the ball is, grit level-wise. If he just has them apply some Rough Buff on top of the polish, it'll be hard to tell what to do next or how far to go with what process.

If the 800 - 1000 grit plus High Gloss doesn't reduce the hook enough, he can go to 1500 grit or 2000 grit and apply the polish.

Of course by that time, it may be safer to just get a new mild ball.

charlest,

That's always good practice. On my first post I suggested the grey pad before the Rough Buff, but either way, it's good to know what's underneath the polish.
We're on the same thought process again, which may be bad for you...

Nah, my and your bowling thought processes are just fine. My bowling is what's bad.

Thanks again for the suggestions, guys.

I'm heading to the shop tonight to talk it over with them, and hopefully take care of it.  In the meanwhile, I've been reading a lot of Ron Clifton's articles on hand positions, reducing revs, etc.  Hopefully between these two I'll be able to find a shot that works.
