Title: Is this useable now?
Post by: Lillen on July 03, 2008, 03:00:40 AM
Found a ball in my basement that I had forgotten about...

It's a Pro Zone Teal and I'm wondering if it's good enough to use on the lanes now since it's 10 years old?

I use old stuff all the time thats 10 years or more old.  There is only one way to find out if you like it on todays conditions... go out and give it a try.  GOOD LUCK!

I agree give it a try.  I pulled out an old danger zone a couple of weeks ago and was happy to see the reaction.  Worked really good on a burned up house shot were everything else I had over reacted.

Thanks guys for your replies..

Any of you know what the oob finish is on the ball?

The sheet on Brunswicks website say "polished finish" and Bowlingballreviews it says "sanded"..

I just bought one of these for my wife.  It sure as heck wasn't polished oob, but I really wouldn't say it was sanded either.  I'm willing to bet a matte finish with a green or gray scotchbright would probably be pretty close.

I wouldn't worry so much about what it was (although it's probably nice to know). I'd worry more about how to make it usable currently. Those initial Brunswick particle were extremely hard and extremely grippy - a super early rolling ball, meant for a LOT of oil.

I'd try something smooth or polished first.

too practical, am I???

Oh, and these balls were all but indestructible. Give them a good bath once in a while, keep the surface fresh and clean, above all clean, and they'll last a lifetime. Can't kill them with a rock.

Reaction Characteristics
Introducing Zone Pro-Tealâ„¢ Proactiveâ„¢ with (ETX 5) traction, the newest in the
Zone line and the latest Proactive coverstock innovation from Brunswick engineers.
The Zone Pro Teal is a higher “average RG” version of the Zone Pro Azure with a
similar “differential RG”. This change in mass distribution creates a Proactive ball that
pushes through the middle part of the lane with a straighter trajectory than the Zone Pro
Azure, than provides a more abrupt breakpoint.
The traction effect generated by Proactiveâ„¢, even when shined, generates a significant
increase in overall hook for virtually any bowler style on a wide variety of lane conditions.
If the bowler desires more hooking action out of the box, Proactiveâ„¢ can be sanded and
will provide a cleaner front end reaction than dull reactive balls, while increasing mid-lane
and back end reaction. Proactiveâ„¢ is a significant improvement over reactive urethane
technology when used dull and delivers a reaction that is much less sensitive on the front
part of the lane. Most of the increase in hook will come in the middle and backend parts of
the lane, offsetting any early reaction that may be created by sanding the ball.

Maybe this will help

As far as I know, the ball should have a so-called "Double Buff" polish that was en vogue at that time, which would be an equivalent of today's "high gloss" factory finish.
But since the coverstock was pretty porous and with a good portion of particle added, it would not shine up as good as a pure reactive would do, whatever you try. I have seen a Teal ZonePro in action some time ago in atournament (pretty smooth), in good shape, and it looked like a current Rough Buff ball with some games to it - but I am not sure how many games it actually had on the clock.

I'd try a 400 grit or slightly finer base and a good amount of polish, that should IMHO do the job.

I used a Pro Zone Teal several years ago.  I still have it in the basement.  It was one of my favorite balls of all time.  A lot people in our area didn't like it.  They thought it hooked too early and didn't finish hard due to using up its energy.  On the right condition, it worked great.  I seem to remember that it was more dull than shiny.  The cover would shine up rather quickly though unless you cleaned the ball frequently.

I've still got my old one downstairs, it was a great ball (i don't use it anymore because it's 16 lbs) As I remember the finish OOB looked around 1-2000 abralon equivalent.
Really really early rolling ball, mine used to have something of a urethane quality to the roll. Ace ball!
