Karma Solid thoughts
« on: January 11, 2012, 04:36:17 AM »
This ball is awesome.  I drilled it 45 x 5-1/2 x 65 with a P4 hole.

My original intention was to use this ball in my casual league, once the shot breaks down.  It turned out to be too over/under for that using a 4000 abralon surface. On a whim, I decided to treat it like an old Danger Zone and sanded it to 800 grit and used it on the fresh.

This turned out to be AWESOME.  On a wet/dry house shot, I cannot think of a better ball reaction.  I can keep chasing the pattern in and it just keeps coming.  I actually got to 22 at the arrows before it started to flatten ... and it still carried those hits.

I wonder what I could expect from a Karma pearl with the same layout, using the box surface.

Anyone else have good luck with this ball?

Much easier length, and once it finds adequate friction, a more quick response than the solid. Not a skid/snap reaction, but more angle than a solid would provide.

The difference is not so much that one is a pearl and the other is a solid, it's more one is dull(er) and the other is shiny. With todays technology there is less (with the same surface)  difference between the 2. It is insignificant.

So, I would feel or think that you would see more length due to the polish and possibly a sharper response at the back of the pattern, but it is PK-18 with a smoother overall response cover, so it would more than likely be length with a similar move to the solid.

What I would consider is possibly a slightly different layout to compliment the solid, in the pearl. Since it is shiny, the ball will get down the lane easier, so instead of 5 1/2 maybe go with 5" and either a similar hole or even go with a P2 hole.

Ric,

Since the PK18 cover has been around for years, and so has the core design, is this "today's technology"?  I do agree that the Karma Pearl is pretty smooth compared to other covers that respond faster, and the Karma Solid seems to get easy length due to the polish.
What if you knock the "gloss" off the solid and leave the pearl shiny (in addition to layout differences) for even more contrast?  What are your thoughts?

Surface dictates length as well as how the bowling ball slows down. The components of the coverstock is what dictates how it responds to friction.

Due to the densities in the material used in coverstock to create appearance, unless the densities are different it is merely aesthetics.

Layouts dictate amount of flare created, the wider the separation in the flare the more the surface comes into play in dictating overall reaction.

So to your question, yes and no. Yes if you change the surface enough and you alter the flare you can create different reactions.
