Lighter oil ball

It seems as though I'll be getting the Scorchin' and now I need a light oil ball to replace my Sling Blade, which is way too strong. I don't really want to get a ball from the Groove series, so I was thinking of drilling a Punisher with the 4L layout. What do you guys think?

Punisher, when you want some Brunswick equipment, no real alternative to IMHO. But with 4L or even 4E, a pearl reactive PG is not a bad choice either, because they are not as jumpy as a Punisher.

Another ball I can recommend for light oil is the Pure Hammer. Very smooth, you just have to tinker with the surface to amke it work for you, but a very good control choice if you want to stay away from nervous pearl stuff.

I'm kind of skeptical about using Power Grooves because they are 3 pieces. Now I realize Tropical Storms are 3 pieces, and they are made by Storm, but are those any good?

Neither the Tropicals nor the Grooves are typical 3-piece balls.  They don't react like pancake-cored balls, nor do they hit like them.  The Grooves have a higher RG than the Tropicals, but they're both good balls.  You wouldn't go wrong with either of them for drier lanes.

The Tropical Storm is good but stronger than advertised.  I think it is better for medium to light conditions rather than dry.  Carries very well on light hits.

I just  bought an old Columbia Vector 1 to be my really light oil and spare ball.  But for medium and light, light oil, I use my OOB Columbia Throttle/R.  If the ball stars jumping too hard off the breakpoint, just take some hand out.

If you are talking about light oil then the Punisher should be a good fit. If you are talking burnt, toasty, totally fried then the Groove is a very goos fit. I struggled practicing this summer because the lanes flat out hook too much for anything in my bag, until I got the new Groove. This is my favorite ball for totally fried lanes.

Right now I can take three balls with me and cover most lane conditions fairly well.
Columbia Action for heavier oil which you have covered with Scorchin
Absolute Inferno for medium oil
BVP Punisher for light oil/drier lanes

This Punisher is a good ball with a strong, strong backend. When track dries up with Absolute, I can switch to Punisher, but have to stand right foot on 14-15 and target 4-5 board at arrows, which gives me different part of lane to play also.  Absolute I stand at 12-14 and target 7-8.  I had a Columbia Flipside Panic drilled to go long, but the Punisher does much better for me on drier lanes and gives me more area of forgiveness.  The flipside is a very weak (low rg diff) ball.  Punisher goes long but is surprisingly strong. I got one in 14lb instead of 15 so I can also increase speed and revs a little if necessary.  Most of my stuff is arcing, and while the Punisher is skid snap, it is easy to control.  Nice ball at a good price.
