looking for a hook ball
« on: September 10, 2006, 07:48:54 AM »
Last season I did well with my untimate inferno.  I bowled a summer league 2 ball challenge league and now I am ready for fall again.  I had my ustimate resurfaced for the season with the same cover and is seems to hit flat.  I had it polished and it still isn't what I want.  I was playing a small curve.  I would start in the middle, throw it out to around the 2nd arrow and it would come back in.  I am looking for a little less ball so I can try to start playing a hook again.  I am not having a good time finding a shot this year and it is just a simple house pattern.  A few years back, I had a plain black night hawk I was usiung and was able to play a hook that was perfect for these lanes.  I would like to play the same shot I was playing with that ball.  I wasn't sure where to post this so I just posted it here as I have been mainly throwing Brunswick lately.  LMK if you have any good ideas for a medium hooking ball that hits hard.  The only two balls I am throwing now are my ultimate and a scorchin inferno.  I am hitting weak and leaving pocket 5 pins.
Thanks, James

Red Zone and a coach might be a great idea.

Might help if you had some personal info -- i.e., PAP, rev rate, axis tilt, etc...but since I take it that you do not have any of this...

It sounds like you are bowling on a THS, with a "sea of oil" in the center of the lane.  Furthermore, you say that you are hitting the pocket weak -- when you are standing at board twenty and throwing it out around the second arrow. My theory is this -- you are not getting the ball out past the flood of oil in the center of the lane, thus you cannot create enough entry angle to carry.  In order to solve this, you do not need another ball -- if you have enough hand, move deeper and open the lane up a little more, if you have less hand, move farther right and play straighter, going up around board 5-7.

If you really wanted to buy a new ball from Brunswick, I might suggest the Red Zone.  That ball is pretty angular at the back -- it might allow you to get enough entry angle.  Also, it seems to be pretty versatile, which is always nice.

I have heard great things about the red zone on here.  I think part of it is the summer league messed me up.  I averaged 219 with the house shot the last few years and had no problem.  I was fine most of the summer until the last 2 weeks of the PBA patterns than everthing went out of wack.  I have never had coaching before, but maybe it would be a good idea.
LMK if you have anyother ideas.
THanks

RevTrex is very right. Any Balls will not hook as much if you don't have enough rev rate, axis tilt. I would get some professional advised or personal trainer from the Pro shop at least 2 lesson. They will trained you for 30mins and show you some technic. Please, Don't be offended but I did the same before I started bowling. Really helps.
Some other way is by tossing a small ball to spin. Then you will get the Idea how to make it spin on the Bowling ball. Then feel your wrist. The wrist is the factor to get the High rev. Trust me. Once you that come out naturally then any balls will hook. Good luck!

Coaching will make your game and scores alot better than buying new balls. Though, new equipment is always exciting!

Thanks for the advice.  I will have to seek a local trainer.  I might try hooking balls on my pool table for practice as well.  I never had a problem with hooking or anything in the past, but the last few weeks of the PBA shots seemed to mess me up.  I think I was aiming the ball too much.  Just after the league ended, I noticed that I was bending my elbow a little, forcing it, and brief casing it also.  I have started fixing those problems but my biggest issue is not being able to get the ball to drive through the pocket.  Last week at league, I bowled a 201, 202 and a 217.  I didn't get more than 4 strikes and any game.  I picked up all my spares though.  I had a double in each of the first two and a turkey in the last one.  I will definately seek help.
THanks, James

You bowled 600+ on a PBA shot?  that really is not that bad...I mean, it's not great, but still...you cannot strike every single time.  Making spares, more than anything, will raise your average.

Like everyone else said, though, getting a coach will help you a lot -- and by keeping your hand behind the ball, increasing your rev rate, etc. you will begin carrying a higher percentage of strikes.

The pba pattern league I only averaged 189.  That league is over.  This is an easy house shot league.  I was happy with the scores last week since I didn't really have a good line or a shot that really drove through the pocket well, but the alley I am bowling at for this league is probably one of the easiest shots in the state.  Many of the people average in the 230 range here and one of the top amatures bowles in the league also.  I am not really a competitive bowler.  I havn't bowled tournaments since I bowled juniors and I am 21 now. I like to bowl well on the house shots though.  I will definately have to get help though.
