Looking for a new ball...
« on: November 19, 2007, 01:30:00 PM »
I find myself searching for a new ball, but not really out of necessity...

Currently I only bowl in one league, might be a late add to another, which is 3rd shift on wood lanes which generally has medium oil for most of the first game.  I think I pretty well have this condition covered as I can usually start out with my Hawg and play on 30 out over 15 if there is still enough oil, eventually transitioning to my Smokin' and swinging it a little more outside.  If there is really no oil the Zone Classic comes out.

I bowled in a city tournament last year that had a longer and heavier pattern than I am used to, so I struggled a bit having to play out of my comfort zone.

I am a Brunswick honk, so I really would like to get the Twisted, but I don't know how much different it will be than any of my current balls, and I am kind of afraid that it might duplicate my Smokin'.  I don't know how well this ball will preform on oilier tracks, which is probably my biggest need.  My pro shop had suggested the Black Widow and LevRG, although I have never used a MoRich product so I am unfamiliar.

I throw with a soft hand, medium track, average speed, have some axis tilt in my release creating a little skid-flip, but I don't have any measurements to date.  Hopefully I can get a video up sometime of my shot and the would probably be more helpful.

Any thoughts?

Thanks for your time.

Mo does use Big B covers, but he adds a little of his own genius to it. But I would agree that a Mo ball would work well. The LevRG is a great ball, but might be a little strong for 3rd shift on wood lanes. I would take a look at the Finish or the Flip. The Flip being a pearl ball will get down the lane and make a corner.

So far, the reviews on the Twisted are that you can add surface and not lose it's angularity off the breakpoint.

But if you're looking for a ball for heavier oil, you'd be better off with a solid reactive cover than a pearl.  If you could find a Strike Zone, it's a real gem for what you describe.  If not, the Fury solid with the right surface is quite good also.  The new Blast Zone may also be a good choice because it's a solid/pearl hybrid with an asymmetrical core.

Although the BW is a solid, it may go a little long if you if you've got more axis tilt, so I would disagree with your driller on that one.  Good luck.

I guess I should have clarified a bit.  I am not looking to bowl the LevRG or whatever heavy oil ball on the 3rd shift lanes, unless it was warranted, this ball would simply be for tournaments or other leagues I enter.  For Hawg supposedly designed for heavy oil, it doesn't get it done for me on the heavier/longer patterns.

I am really only looking at the Twisted for my current league condition or maybe a little more oil.  Also, like I said, I am a Brunswick honk, so I am always looking to try out their newest stuff.  I will probably end up getting a Twisted at some point, I was just curious how well it took to oil.

More than likely I will give the LevRG a try, although I am open to others suggestions and I have been looking at the Resurgence as well.

Thanks for your responses.

Thanks for clarifying. I misunderstood what you were getting at, but it could be my fault, too.

On most league shots the Twisted should work unless they're on the slick side, then I'd still recommend the Blast Zone. Dull or shiny this ball is more  versatile than most.

But if there's plenty of friction, the Twisted will allow you to stay closer to the friction and open up the lane more.  Make sense?

There is plenty of friction out there, my main concern is I am going to laydown for a Twisted and get a reaction that is not all that different from my Smokin' White Pin in that it is long and snappy. Now with the different cover and rough bough versus the more polished Smokin', I assume it should be able to play more in the oil but also be able to recover on a slight pitchout better.  Is that a fair assessment of the two?

Btw you completely made sense.

The Twisted should cover more boards on the back if thrown on the same line. As long as there's friction outside I would imagine that it's chances of surviving a pitch-out are better than the Smokin'.
