Mastermind Scholar and Vintage Danger Zone
« on: April 02, 2016, 08:08:53 PM »
I redrilled my Scholar from 4 inch pin to pap to 6 inches with the mb 1.5 inches right of the thumb. I then put the cover 500, 4000 polish. Got exactly what I was hoping for in reaction. Super clean up front with a continuos smooth backend. Great for the second and third games in our 5 men league.

If I lay the Danger Zone out the same,  what should I expect in reaction? I would like to use the Danger Zone ahead of the Scholar. I have never used the lightbulb core and wonder if I need to move the pin closer to my PAP.

I am bowling on a THS on Brunswick lanes.

Thanks

CC

With the symmetrical core of the Danger Zone, it will not have a strong of a skid / snap motion downlane with the pin to pap distance of 6 inches like the Scholar. With the light bulb core and the solid coverstock, it will have an earlier more even reaction. If you want to lay them out similarly, I would use a 4.5 to 4.75 inch pin to pap to help reduce the flare.

The DZ is one of the rolliest/flattest balls in the Brunswick lineup at the moment making it a great ball for starting out in the track on fresh lanes.
I agree with the 4.5" layout and don't be afraid to add a little scuff to the DZ so that it tractions enough on fresh.

I have a Nirvana laid out 4.5 inches from my PAP. It is too much most of the time, on the fresh.

There is a big difference in cover and core strength between the Nirvana and Danger Zone.
I'd consider the Nirvana a 10 for ability to handle oil and the DZ at about a 6 or 7

Thanks.  I will try 4.75 and see how it works out. I want to reduce the flare. I laid out the Lt48 4 inch pin to PAP  and it flared too much. I am hoping for a different result from the Danger Zone.

Max Flare on a symmetrical core is 3 3/8 from PAP and decreases the farther away you get
