My HS Tryouts ended. . .holy crap!
« on: October 24, 2006, 12:59:57 PM »
High school tryouts for the bowling team ended today. . .I have made it the last 2 years. The past years, a THS was layed out for tryouts. THIS year, a different sport shot pattern was layed out for all 3 days of tryouts. . .

1st day- X-mas tree, around 38-39ft.(not sure if that is precise though)
         Games-214, 279, 181=674  Ave-224.7
2nd day- 29ft shot
         Games-199, 215, 201=615  Ave-205
3rd day- 43ft shot
         Games-179, 209, 211=599  Ave-199.9
OVERALL AVERAGE-209.77777

I honestly can say I have been in 4 or 5 sport shot leagues and have never averaged near that. I mostly used my Absolute, Scorchin, and Radical for all 3 days. Came out with the #1 spot on the ave list, plus 1 more year on the team.
Time to add a 3rd Championship to the the schools history!

PS-LOOK OUT FCBowler, we got a REALLY good team this year!

Also, I know that a good friend and teammate of mine, BluTheBowler is a member on here. . .hopefully, he can shoot another 300 in match play like he did last year! Broke all kinds of state and School records!

Nice bowling!  You must have a versatile game.

I've never heard of Christmas Tree and sport shot used together.  Maybe just a bad description?  The 29' sounds like a lot of fun.  Not!  31' of screaming back ends.  How did you attack it?

I ended up tackling the 29ft with my Smokin, playing striaght up with some loft. . .took pret much all my revs off the ball too.

i felt kinda bad for those who were new to tryouts this year and have never bowled on a sport shot before, only THS. they didnt know what to do when they hit the 29ft. Their ball just swerved straight into the gutter. The 43ft most could deal with. . .but trust me, the gutter ate up a bunch of balls over those three days. . .

Wow, thats crazy.  What state do you live in.  Here in Jersey I don't think that there was a single team last year that had 5 bowlers that woud have been competent on that type of shot.  My team took about a 120 avg on an easy THS to qualify.  Our varsity squad had a couple 160 bowlers, a couple 170's and me who, at the house we bowled high school in, averaged only 200, and still was high average by 16 pins (the hardest house shot I've ever bowled on, I've scored better on most sport patterns).  This team won conference and county.  Granted we don't have the best county / conference competition, but that should give you an idea what it took in NJ.  A few years ago we had some real powerhouse teams, and one year the kid that won states veraged over 250 to win, now it took two teens to qualify first.

Well, anyways, nice shooting and good luck this year.

I live in KY, and go to Trinity High School. . .we won state the 1st 2 years HS bowling was around and havent dont any worse than 3rd overall.

Some of you out there may know Daniel Farish, 2006 Junior Gold Team. . .he bowled all 4 of his HS years here. A bunch of people with some serious talent have come and gone through here. . .

Ten Pin lanes cooksey. . .
I also work there, so it does help me a little

Also Thank You everyone for the compliments!
I found out today I have to go back in tomorrow for 1 last day of tryouts because there are still a  few people on the bubble between making it and getting cut.
Cant wait to see what the pattern is tomorrow(even though I dont have to worry)!!!

Also, trying out on sport shot conditions makes us the superb team we are. It picks out those who can adjust properly, cand those who cant. All other teams I know of hold tryouts on a THS. We practice on a THS, but the coach can really pick those who are overall good bowlers in all kinds of situations. Only 4-5 people out of the 27 people who tried out have been in a sport shot league, so it shows the new people that the regular shot at the house we practice at is not the same as all of the 5-7 houses we will bowl at throughout the season. Plus, those who bowl only at the place we tryout at would have an unfair advantage to those who dont(on the THS, i mean).

That is why we tryout on Sport shot patterns. . .

Thanks,
Chrispy

On a THS right now, I am averaging a 216 in my Sat morning league. This year we have 4 people averaging 200 or more on the sport shot patterns, plus one averaging 199.5. I know that the top 12-13 people on the team average 200+ on a THS. Through all (now) 6 years of HS bowling that we have had a team, 5 300's have been shot in match play, including 2 last year, plus multilpe 289, 290 games. Inmatch play, we only shoot 2 normal games, then 4 baker games. For the set of 2 games, 30+ people have shot 500+ over the years we have been a team. In normal legues, 4 people have 300's, 1 a 299, 1 a 298 and a BUNCH of 700's. Being undefeated a Whole season is not uncommon at all, we did it the last 3 years. NO OFFENSE Pin Crusher, but 220 games around here are like a 190 game elsewhere. Too many of them to consider them a "good" game. A "good" game is probably 250+. 220 games are good for your ave though. . .

It think its awesome to have other HS teams out there that are really good. I think its awesome to have other HS teamsout there period. HS bowling is the fastest growing sport in the nation right now. . .

Thanks,

Really, around here there are some really good bowlers, yet usually its like one to a team, and some don't even bowl high school.  My friend whose just as good as me, averaged 230-240 in my Sat morning league, yet didn't have a high school team to bowl for.  To my knowledge, the best bowler to come through here in at least 5 or so years (I don't know too much about before then, so I won't say), Matt O'Grady didn't bowl for a high school team.

I've heard about high school bowling and how its grown so much, yet what I see in my immediate area is just the opposite.

One other side note / question thats a little bit off topic, what is the format of your state tournament.  Here we have a sectional qualifier, 3 games on a THS, then a state tourney that has 3 THS games ct to top 40, three more games moving a pair, cut to top five, step latter on one pair to winner.  I have yet to see it get any of what I feel to be the top 5 or perhaps even 10 bowlers in the state as the winner.
