My thoughts on the Bruiser
« on: January 23, 2004, 07:13:33 PM »
I'm not usually seen outside of the Visionary/Lane 1/AZO forums, but this little gem caught my eye so I had to pick one up.

My Bruiser is 16lbs, has a pin out of 4", and is drilled 4x3 at 45 degrees.  I also took the cover down to 800 grit, because I wanted this ball to handle carrydown better than most of my other equipment does.

Now about the lanes, newly resurfaced wood, second shift lighter medium crown pattern.  This pattern usually blows up into a tube depending on how many crankers/power players are on the pair.  Although with the resurface, the backends were flying so it was possible to play a bigger swing area than before.

To start the evening, I played with my slide foot on 30, standing on the dots using the second arrow as my break point.  First off, this ball without shine can cover a decent amount of boards, it's no slouch by any means.  It was actually too strong for the condition, but I was stubborn and made the ball work for me.  After the three game set, I only had to adjust three boards left with my feet, and I adjusted two boards left with my target.  The Bruiser allowed me to stay where I wanted to longer than alot of other euipment I've used before.

This is my first run in with PK18, and let me tell you folks, I love the cover!  I don't know if it's predominently coverstock here, or just the ball in general, but it's super versatile.  I could play tighter lines deep, or cover some area if I wanted to with the same success.  This Monster is very receptive to hand release adjustments, and is very forgiving of mistakes as well.  If I threw it too far out, it will make it back light enough to scatter the pins, but if I pulled it in the ball would over hook, just a little too strong for that mistake.  I could play with a high track and low track release with the same results, and actually I pretty much received the same reaction from both releases.

The Bruiser itself on the lanes makes it easily down the first 30 feet of lane without problems.  We had decent amount of head oil, but the ball didn't squirt up either coming out of it as well.  It revs up early because of my lay out, right after the 30 foot mark it was ready to turn over, then starts to roll.  Even in the dull state it has a pretty decent punch, but I'd consider the reaction shape to be like a strong arcing crescent.  This is a very good hitting and carrying ball, I didn't leave alot of tens or wierd leaves, so it must have matched up well all around.

This is a superb ball all around and I still can't get over how versatile it is, but it's not picking up notice too much in my area.  I've only seen a handful of them thrown, but they don't come close to how this one looks/reacts.  I am thoroughly pleased with the fact that it is a cheaper ball as well, even tough I paid $35 for mine used, I can get a new one for a terrific price.  Like someone else said, thank you Brunswick for re-releasing the Quantums.

What's the cover on the SlayR?

On Edit:  It is Powerkoil LS...

Which Monster uses PK17, or which Brunswick ball other wise?

Chrome Yellow Power Groove is a pearl PK17. Monster Red/Black & Green/Black are recently discontinued pearl PK17. Do a search at BowlingBallReview.com with the parameters Brunswick, Discontinued, and search for 17. That will list the balls.

Thanks, but I might have to pass up the Grooves unless I seriously couldn't find a Red/Black or Green/Monster.

I used my Bruiser last night for the first time.  I drilled it 3 x 3, sanded the cover to 1000 grit.  I, like you, wanted something to handle alittle carrydown.  We changed oil this year to Prodigy and it carries down like crazy.  Anyway, my particle stuff was using too much energy in the mids and my polished reactive was sliding.  So, I used the Bruiser and bang 670.  I kept it tight and didn't get it into the dry early.

I love the Pk 18.  I would definitely call it the most versatile, longest lasting cover ever produced.

I noticed this ball will definitely roll out if it hits the dry too soon, or too much of it.  I however managed to get the ball to roll out before crossing brooklyn a few times when I chose to swing the ball, instead of a tight line.  What looked like certain doom ended up working like a charm, as if I intended it that way.

Thanks for pointing that out Andrew.

Yeah, I paid a big price the last game.  I was clean for the set until the 9th of the 3rd game.  I hit 9 at the break point instead of 10, 4-6 split  I was definitely what I was looking for.

I started the night swinging the ball and after 3 frames the I left a 2 pin.  So, I moved 1 right with my feet and 1 left with my mark.  Just kept it tight.

I threw one bad shot all night that resulted in the big four...where my head went I don't know.  I missed two damn ten pins as well but managed to shoot 710 for the night first time using the Bruiser.  Sometimes you got to kick yourself in the rump when you blow easy spares.

I moved deeper to avoid the roll out after I did it three times in a row.  I got scared and didn't want to ruin a good set.

I threw a couple of bad shots but THS made me look good.  I sent it out wide and the ball ripped back and left a 9 pin.  This guy on the other team said "great shot", which I replied "dude, I miss 4 boards at the breakpoint, it was a bad shot".  Funny stuff....

well, got to get back to work.

I had a killer weekend with this ball;

Friday night on lighter patterns swinging it 33 to 10 I shot 710.

Sunday night longer fresh mediums playing straight up ten with more hand to get the ball to turn I shot 700 on the nose.

Monday night shorter fresh medium playing ten to five up the back to keep the backend calm I shot 750.

All this was done on wood lanes, but I will test the Bruiser on synthetics Thursday.

I can honestly say I'm truly impressed with something outside of Visionary.

There are usually 10 green black monsters up on Ebay at a time.  The red black is a little harder to find.
